Different Types of Tarp Material and Their Uses

Tarpaulins, or tarps, have a variety of different uses. Some of these uses include

•    Shelters or ground cover when out in the wilderness
•    Protection for brickwork or masonry during construction
•    Protection of exposed wood during transportation
•    Cover for a baseball diamond in inclement weather
•    As a drop cloth while painting

Different types of tarp are going to be useful for different things, and there's a wide variety of tarp material available, each with it's own advantages.

1. Canvas

Canvas is waterproof, and it comes in light and industrial weights. Canvas tarps are useful as covers for boxing rings, tractors, boats, and as temporary job-site covers.

2. Polyethylene Fabric

Polyethylene fabric is waterproof, rip-resistant, flexible and durable, and it resists mildew, punctures, and UV rays too. It comes in a variety of grades, and is useful for tire and tractor covers, construction site scaffolding covers, shipyard and dock enclosures, salvage covers, and offshore oil rigs.

3. Mesh Fabric

Mesh fabric is a durable, light-weight, weather-resistant tarp material. It's commonly used for custom covers, outdoor fencing, ball parks, construction jobsites, parks and recreation, retention pond areas, and outdoor events.

4. Polyester

Polyester is versatile and durable and it posseses a number of useful qualities. It resists stretching, shrinking, abrasions, and mildew. It can be made to be fire-retardant and waterproof, and it can be treated to resist UV rays and bacteria.

5. Vinyl

Vinyl tarps come in a variety of types and weights, each of which has its own uses. Clear Viynl is waterproof and useful for deck, patio, and boat repair and at construction sites. Heavy-duty vinyl tarps are useful for salvage, fire debris containment, dog kennels and fire-retardant equipment storage. Super-heavy laminated polyester fabric is a waterproof tarp material made to be fire retardant and rip-resistant. It's best used in trucking,  industrial roofing and agriculture.

In addition to this, there are a number of speciality materials for tarps as well. Vinyl-coated polyester is anti-static, tear-resistant, flame-resistant, and waterproof. It's useful for gym floor coverings, welding curtains, and interior dividers. Neoprene coated nylon is strong and resists chemicals, abrasions, UV rays, grease, solvent and mildew. Hypalon-coated nylon is extremely weather-resistant and good at handling oxidizing chemicals, UV rays and temperatures of up to 250° F, making it ideal for prolonged outdoor use.

This list only covers the more common types of tarp material available. With the huge variety in type, weight, and thickness, there's a tarp for suitable for just about any task or job imaginable.
