For the therapy novice it may seem like all psychotherapy is basically the same, but the reality is that there are many different approaches, with some working better for certain issues than others. While there is often overlap across these therapy categories, understanding which might work best for what can help you narrow down finding a good therapist. Many psychologists also offer different approaches, depending on a patient’s needs, or may refer you to another therapist who specialises in an approach that could be a better fit. Finding a good therapist, though, begins by realising that not all therapy is made equal, and then testing out different options to see what works best for you.
