Different Types of Excavators and Their Respective Uses

by James Spencer Blogger

Being one of the most commonly used equipment at construction sites, the excavator has undergone major changes in recent times in order to meet modern needs of builders or constructors. Considered to be heavy-duty construction machinery the excavator comprises the following:

  • Boom
  • Dipper
  • Bucket
  • Cab

These rotate on a platform referred to as “house”. The system works on hydraulic force and the movements and functionalities are performed using the hydraulic force which is possible by means of a hydraulic fluid. Also there are hydraulic motors and cylinders present. Linear actuation causes them to operate differently than that of cable operated excavators.

Various excavators

An excavator is mainly used at construction sites for digging up trenches, foundations and holes. These highly powerful machineries ensure that every task is completed with efficacy and with ease. The different types of excavators are as follows:

Crawler excavators

The crawler excavators are engineered to do the following:

  • Digging earth
  • Grading earth
  • Moving earth
  • Moving larger objects

Furthermore the crawler excavators are classified as per their mode of operation. Some of the most common crawler excavators work on modes such as:

  • Walker
  • Wheeled
  • Towed
  • Rail

Crawlers work mostly like that of a tracked tank which is used by the defence department. They operate on same rotating wheels like tracked tanks. These machineries are enabled to pick, dig and excavate materials. The crawler mostly comprises the following:

  • Crawler chassis
  • Rotor support
  • Central swivel joints
  • Turntables
  • Device weight
  • Panel
  • Cab
  • Air-conditioners

Dragline excavators

The dragline excavator is used mainly to conduct civil engineering works along with surface mining. There are mostly two categories of draglines available:

  • Draglines catering to standard lifting
  • Draglines built at site for tailored solutions

Sometimes crawlers featuring a winch drum to its frontal part can function like that of a dragline. The units can however be dismantled and transported to sites for catering to tailored needs. The draglines have a wide range of applications discussed below:

  • Road
  • Port
  • Construction
  • Pond
  • Canal

The draglines help with dredging and can help with pile driving.

Suction excavators

Among the many Excavators in Shellharbour the suction excavator deserves to be mentioned for producing powerful suction force with the help of pipes having wider mouth. The inlet speed of air may extend to 100 meters/second. They are more or less constructed like that of any vacuum truck and have an even bigger suction hose. Also, their suction power is higher. An Excavating Contractor Albion Park will use the suction excavator to cut through earth and suck up all the loose debris or litter from a site. The end of the suction pipe is mostly toothed which helps the system to cut through soil and take in all objects or debris which lay loose on a surface.

These three types of excavators are highly in demand especially in the civil industry. Small or large scale, excavators have various applications irrespective of the volume of work.
