Different Types of additives

by Sofia Khan Specialties in White Spirit & Base Oil Productions
When base oils like Base oil sn150 is to be improved in terms of properties, additives are commonly used. They are responsible for enhancing, suppressing or imparting new properties to the base oil. They play an important role in maintaining the lubrication of any machinery. This makes it used so widely in various segments.

Lubricant additives are expensive chemicals additives which are often used to create the proper mix or formulation. Such additives are hard to create and it is a complicated science.  Using these types of additives it is easy to differentiate turbine oil from hydraulic oil. It can also help differentiate between gear oil and engine oil. They have ability to get mixed easily with base oil and Bright stock 150 and thus they are widely chosen.

They are also often selected because of their ability to perform their intended function. There are many types of additives lubricant available. Some additives lubricants like anti-oxidants can only perform their defined function when they are in the body of the oil while there exist some other additives lubricants like anti-wear additives and rust inhibitors as well which can do their work on the surface of the metal itself.

Types of Lubricant Additives can be:

There can be many types of chemical additives which when mixed into base oils can enhance their properties. When it is required to suppress some undesirable properties of the base oil or impart some new properties of the base oil, additives can be used.

  • Extreme Pressure (EP) Additives - These types of additives are chemically aggressive.  They can easily react with metal surfaces so as to form a sacrificial surface film. This is created to prevent welding and seizure caused by opposing asperities. They are activated at high contact temperatures so high loads can be created.  They are commonly used in gear oils. It can add unique and strong sulphur smell to oils.

  • Anti-wear additives – These types of additives uses extreme pressure agent. The Anti-wear additives are chemical additives that carry out the function of protecting metal surfaces while at the time of boundary lubrication.  It acts as a barrier for the wear surfaces by creating a protective film. It helps create a layer of hydrodynamic or elastohydrodynamic film which when maintained helps metal surfaces from corrosions.

  • Detergents – It can perform two functions simultaneously. It can help keep hot metal components free from deposit and may also help protect the creation of create neutralize acids that is form in the oil.  Detergents are used in engine oils. They are alkaline or basic in nature.  This can form the basis of the reserve alkalinity in engine oils. A detergent additive is normally used in conjunction with a dispersant additive.

  • Dispersant Lubricant Additives – These lubricants are mainly found in engine oil and they also help keep engines clean and free from deposits.  The main function of dispersants is to keep particles soot and finely dispersed in diesel engine. It can minimize damage. Dispersants or Dispersant Lubricant Additives serves the objective of keeping the contaminant suspended. It does not allow it to agglomerate in the oil. The combination of detergent and dispersant additives can be used in acidic compounds to neutralize it and thus it performs the task of neutralizing acids as well.

These are some types of lubricants which are widely used in different segments depending upon the quality they possess. When mixed with components like Base oil Sn500, it can change their properties. It is very important to mix right lubricant with right properties in right amount to change the properties of the main element in the right way.
