There is a reason why you would find the bedding section of any online home furnishing store in Manchester, Birmingham, London or Liverpool to be so huge: there you can find various kinds of sheets, pillows & bed coverings. Not only these, but you will also find varying prints, colours & sizes. All these may be a bit confusing for you to learn but knowing them would help you shop the right item online. Whether it is a bed covering, linen, an insert with a duvet cover or just a pillow, knowing the meanings of these terms would help you in creating the perfect bed.

Fitted sheet: Fitted sheet or bottom sheet is a sheet that comes with an elastic edge and fits on the mattress. Since today’s mattresses are thicker, check the measurement before purchasing a bottom sheet to ensure it stretches on your mattress.

Bedspread: Bedspreads are thin decorative coverings, which usually cover up the entire bed & touches the floor as well. Chenille, cotton, polyester or wool are some common materials of a bedspread.

Coverlet: This is a decorative fabric covering, which doesn’t touch the floor or cover up the pillows in general. Quilts and woven coverlets fall in this section. Usually, these are bed accents & they sit on top of the bedspreads. These are found at food of a bed in the bedding of a hotel room – where they are used as a foot runner.

Blanket: A blanket adds warmth. Some people use it just like that while others prefer topping it up with an attractive quilt, duvet or comforter. A blanket is usually made up of cotton, wool, microfiber plush, polyester or a blend of various fibres.

Comforter: It is a bed cover that’s stuffed with down or fibres for warmth & then sewn on all sides. It is available in a wide range of patterns, colours & styles and is a decorative accent in a bedroom. Comforters are mostly made either if polyester or of cotton.

Duvet: This is same as that of a comforter except that it needs a duvet cover whereas a comforter doesn’t. A duvet is found in solid white & stuffed with something like that of down or its alternative to get that warmth.

Duvet cover: The cover is used for encasing and protecting the duvet. It comes with an opening for the duvet or the comforter to be inserted. After the duvet is placed inside, the opening is closed either with buttons or with a zipper. Duvet covers are usually quite decorative & are available in a wide range of styles and colours. They take the place of a top sheet in England.

Continental pillow: This is a big square decorative pillow, which sits back against a bedhead. The cover can be removed for washing.

Sleeping pillow: It is a rectangular-shaped pillow where you lay your head upon while sleeping. It is available in many styles and sizes. King, queen and standard are the different sizes of these sleeping pillows.

Throw pillow: It is also called a throw or accent pillow. It’s a small pillow, which comes in various sizes, shapes & colours to add décor to the bed.

Cotton Bed Sheets & Pillows

Bolster pillow: This is a tubular pillow that’s used for lumbar support when on the bed. It’s is used while reading in the bed but is more often used for decorative purpose.

Pillowcase: It is used for covering a bolster, decorative or sleeping pillow. The pillowcase needs to be changed twice every week for protecting the facial skin from any kind of skin irritation.

Pillow sham: A pillow sham is a decorative covering for a pillow designed with ruffles, trims, cording or flanges. People in London often add a couple of pillow shams to their bed for an extra style.

Other kinds of bed accessories

Bed skirt: This is a decorative fabric piece that’s placed between the box springs and mattress. It extends to floor at the bottom and sides of a mattress. The main function of a bed skirt is to hide box spring and add a touch of colour, softness and décor to the bedroom.

Throw blanket: This is smaller in size than a regular one and adds extra warmth at foot of a bed or if wrapped around the shoulders. It is a great way of adding a touch of class as well as colour to a bed.

Featherbed: Being made up of feathers within a fabric shell, a featherbed lies on top of any mattress. It usually has elastic straps or a fitted sheet on it so that it can fit on the mattress & stay in its place.
