The use of some spices and seasonings in the right amounts is what makes every cuisine unique. We always love food that has different flavours, which only happens when we have so many spices.

So, what exactly are spices? Spices are scented and strongly flavoured food ingredient that comes from plants. Spices add flavour and fragrance to different dishes.

There are different types of spices and seasonings used while cooking. Some are used in raw form and others in their dried form. Some basic spices are commonly used in all dishes like turmeric, cumin powder, coriander powder. Others are extra spices and are used to add more flavours. For example, Nigella seeds, nutmeg, carom seeds, fenugreek etc., come under this category.

There are several such interesting facts that many of you do not know. Let’s look at a few of them.

Cardamom 

Did you know that cardamom is one of the costliest spices in the world? It is costly as the harvesting it requires takes a lot of man force and manual labour. It originally came from the Malabar coast but is now grown in many other places.

Black cardamom is spicy and smoky, while the green one has a delicate eucalyptus taste. Cardamom is usually used for its flavour in desserts and tea.

Saffron 

The most expensive spice in the world, saffron, is more expensive than gold!

Found in the beautiful valley of Kashmir, India, these spices add colour to desserts. It has a honey-like aroma. It is also added to warm milk for its strong taste and aroma.

Cinnamon 

Cinnamon is one spice that is used in desserts and cakes of the western world. It has a soft sweet taste and woody aroma.

A pinch of cinnamon changes the taste of the whole dessert. Cinnamon does not add flavour, but it has many health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and preventing cancer.

Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka and India, commonly grown in the Western ghats of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Cumin

Cumin is one of the commonly used spices added to vegetables, curries, dal, and much more.

It is added because of its strong aroma and taste and is often the first spice and seasoning added while cooking many dishes.

Cumin comes from the parsley family that is used in various Italian dishes.

Cumin is roasted well before usage. However, use cumin carefully as its taste can be overpowering.

These are a few really interesting facts about various spices and seasonings used in the Indian kitchen. One of the best parts about most spices is that they are not spicy but smoky. So, store them in air-sealed containers to uphold their aroma and freshness.
