Design of the Digital Handheld Metal Detector

The application of metal detector is very extensive, such as textile, food, clothing, treasure hunt, mining and metallurgy, mine detection and other fields. As a kind of electronic detection instrument, metal detector has different uses in different kinds of fields in modern society. In the military, it can detect metal landmines. In the archaeology, it can be used to detect metal object buried in the tomb, found the gold and silver jewelry or treasures. In engineering construction, it can detect metal buried objects such as pipelines and ducts under the ground. In security inspection, it can detect the hidden or carry metal weapon. In mining, it can be used to detect metal particles. With the development of the metal detector technology, metal detector is becoming more and more advanced. And researchers designed the digital metal detector type, which is more accurate. Later on, for the purpose of easy to carry and use to security staffs, digital handheld metal detector was created, and it plays a more and more important role in security inspection. The design of the digital handheld metal detector includes goods detector system simulation and practical tests.

The testing device of the baggage x ray machine should take the following several aspects into consideration.

(1)Must has very high sensitivity, can check out the precision metal content to meet the requirements;

(2)Also has a high degree of operating stability, resistance ability to the external environment disturbance, and convenient maintenance;

(3)Can realize detection data acquisition, displaying, processing, storage, marking, and query tasks and so on;

(4)Has good flexibility and easy to extension.

Detection device development process flow of digital handheld metal detector is as follows:

(1)Writing task instruction based on the  airport security scanner requirements;

(2)According to task instruction, determine the technical indicators;

(3)Determine the peripheral chips of DSP chip;

(4)Division of the overall design of the software and hardware: writing software and hardware design specification, software design includes programming, debugging, and system integration, hardware design includes circuit and hardware debugging;

(5) System test, complete prototype, and then product test and production.

System structure design of digital x-ray cargo scanner

Digital handheld metal detector is mainly composed of two parts: the control unit and the eddy current sensor. The control unit is composed by the detection circuit, filter circuit, sinusoidal oscillator, LCD display circuit, signal processing circuit, and power circuit. The process of system composition of digital handheld metal detector is as follows: (1) the sinusoidal oscillator; (2) sensors; (3) demodulation circuit; (4) filtering; (5) signal processing; (6) action circuit.

This paper discusses the general parts in the process of the design of the digital handheld metal detector, and hopes to be able to help in future digital handheld metal detector.
