Delhi - The City with Blend of Politics and Heritage

The Qutub Minar is the oldest which dates back to 1199 A.D. It was built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak of the Mamluk Dynasty in memory of Sufi saint.

It is the tallest minaret in brick and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Red Fort which, is also declared as the UNESCO world heritage site, was built in 1648 by the 5th Mughal emperor. It served as the residence of the Mughal emperors for about 200 years till the East India Company established its hold in India.

The next are the politically and historically important sites of which Teen Murti Bhavan is one, which was originally constructed by the British architect for the British commander - in – chief of India in 1930.

After independence it was the official residence of the first Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru. It was later maintained as Nehru museum after his death. It has a planetarium, a museum and a library.

The India Gate is situated just in the heart of Delhi and was unveiled in 1931 to commemorate the Indian soldiers who laid their lives during the World War l under the British rule. In 1971 the Amar Jawan Jyoti was added to the structure to pay homage to the unknown soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the country.

The next is the Raj Ghat which is Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial. He was cremated on 31st January 1948, a day after his assassination. The black marble platform has a flame which is left open in the sky.

The next memorial in the list is the Indira Gandhi Memorial which was originally her residence. Indira Gandhi was a dynamic person and she is the only female Prime minister of India till date. It has a collection of her personal belongings and few rooms are dedicated to her son Sanjay Gandhi.

The next on list are the two most famous temples, that are Birla Mandir and Lotus temple. The Birla Mandir was built in the 1939 by the famous Birla family. The temple is famous for its beautiful carvings. The last is the Lotus Temple which is a significant symbol of Bahai faith. It is named so because it is shaped like a lotus and people of any religion can come and pray inside the structure.
