Definition and Causes of Paraplegia
Paraplegia is defined
as a medical condition involving impairment in sensory function or motor of the
lower extremities. It is basically a classification of paralysis, the globally
known term to define the loss of sensation or any movement because of damage to
a nerve in the body.
The basic cause of Paraplegia
is spinal cord injury because of any trauma or accident. Motor Vehicle
accidents are its main cause and people of age 65+ falls in it. The numbness or the paralysis can either be
immediate or delayed, it is not always immediately apparent. The resultant
bleeding and swelling can lead to additional injury and hence it is always
advised to sought out medical attention immediately. As the total time frame is
pretty critical for optimal assessment and recovery.
Another known cause of Paraplegia is
congenital conditions for example spina bifida, in which the spinal canal's
neural elements of the spinal canal are affected. Some damages can also ensure
blood clots or tumors, but is not that common. Having greater tendency towards
the risky behavior, itis more widespread in males than in females.
Paraplegia is
categorized on the basis of affected areas. If only one limb is affected the it
is termed as monoplegia, while if the arms are also affected by numbness or
paralysis, then the right term is quadriplegia. It is further categorized into
incomplete andcomplete. Complete paraplegia is referred when there is absolute
damage of the area of the spinal cord. A patient with complete paraplegia may
have total motor function and sensory loss. While incomplete paraplegia is
described as the partial damage. For example, individual with incomplete
paraplegia may have some sensory function at some extent but no movement. In
some cases vice versa.
