Deer Fence

One of the most important areas of a deer farm is the fencing.  Keeping the stock safe and secure is a top priority for deer farmers. The most effective and widely used type of deer fencing is fixed knot woven wire fencing. 

A high tensile Titan fence is one of the strongest and most durable fencing options on the market. Its strength comes from its fixed vertical wires and the fixed Titan knot – a large, easily visible and extremely strong non-slip knot.

The fence is made from galvanized steel and is resistant to corrosive damage. A correctly installed, high quality woven wire fence manufactured from high tensile steel can last for more than 40 years depending on the quality and treatment of the fence posts used; this vastly reduces maintenance and repair costs compared with using a lower quality or badly installed fence.

There are several different options for fixed knot fencing, with varying options available for the height of the woven wire and the gaps between the vertical wires. A fence height of 96” has proven effective all over the world – deer have a tendency to jump over lower fences. A deer fence of this height featuring the Titan fixed knot creates a very strong barrier that is also highly visible, helping to minimise impact damage from the contained animals.

Vertical wires can be spaced between 3” and 12” apart; the distance should be determined by the particular application of the fence in the area in question. The closer the vertical wire spacing, the stronger the deer fence will be. However, more closely spaced the vertical wires mean that more steel is being used, making the fence more expensive. 6” vertical wire spacing is the most commonly used, providing a good balance between strength and cost-effectiveness. 3” vertical wire spacing may be used for areas of high animal pressure, whereas a more economical 12” spacing might be used for areas of lower pressure such as dividing internal deer farm paddocks.

In some cases it may be advisable to use a double-fence system; for example, the effectiveness of a perimeter fence can be greatly increased around a deer farm, by installing a second woven wire deer fence 3-4 feet away from the first perimeter net. This creates a barrier that deer are unable to clear and that predators will find extremely difficult to negotiate.
