Deciding Between Scaffolding Rental and Buying

by Larry Chetan Business

Often, we have found ourselves in a fix where we cannot choose whether to buy or hire something. The same case applies in the construction industry where job owners get stuck between purchasing scaffolding or going for scaffolding rental. It is a tough decision for project managers to make considering each choice has its benefits and some shortcomings. The factors below will help you in deciding whether to hire or buy the scaffold systems.

What is the Operating Budget?

The first factor that should guide you is the budget at hand. More than often, renting scaffolds is more economical than buying yours. This will save you more. The money you save will go into expanding your ventures and other areas of the project including other tools and safety equipment.

Length of the Project

The second factor to have in mind is the length of the project. If the project is running for less than three months, it will not be sensible to buy scaffolds. If it is running for three or fewer months, the best alternative is to hire them and save time and money.

Also, if you are starting a short-term project but you are unsure how many other jobs will come your way, a scaffolding rental company should be your partner. It will be a safe and best economical choice to hire in such a case.

However, if you have a project that you are sure will be running for more than three months, you can invest in own scaffolds. If you also foresee a need for the systems down the line and for other projects, purchasing own scaffolding equipment is viable. Through repeat usage and hiring your equipment out, the cost of buying them will be offset within no time.

The Amount of Scaffolding Needed

Before you begin walking the purchasing path, it is essential that you consider the volume of equipment that your project will require. It is also good to consider the storage as well as transportation costs. Here, the basic rule is that it is more economical to rent than buy scaffolds. To add to that, the more equipment you need, the higher the cost of buying them. That leaves you the option of leasing.

At the same time, buying your equipment will force you to have an off-site storage location. Even if the site is yours, there will be transportation costs all the time you need them. Not to forget, there will arise the need for security of the storage space which is costlier too.

Your Experience

The other important aspect to consider is your experience levels. Are you conversant enough with the scaffolds? Do you have a trained team that can help you in managing them? If your experience level is not sufficient to erect, operate, and dismantle the systems, buying will be a wrong choice.
