Asthma is a common condition that affects many people worldwide. It is a condition when the muscles of the airways get inflamed, leading to breathing difficulties. It is often referred to as an invisible illness, meaning that it is difficult to tell whether the patient has asthma unless they are showing any symptoms.

Though asthma is prevalent in many people, there are a lot of misconceptions associated with the condition.

In this blog, an asthma specialist debunks some of the common myths about asthma to help manage the condition in a better way.

Myths vs. Facts about Asthma

Below are some of the myths surrounding asthma presented with facts.

  • Asthma is a psychological disease
This is not all true. Psychological problems are not a cause of asthma. It is a medical condition where the muscles of the lungs get swollen, leading to breathing problems. The condition is even more triggered by allergic reactions. It affects both adults and children.

  • Asthma medications are addictive
Asthma is a chronic condition. So, patients should always take medicines to manage the condition. The medicines are completely safe and are not addictive. Patients with severe asthma attacks are prescribed inhalers by doctors to control the inflammation and keep the condition under check. Inhalers are not habit-forming.

  • Asthma symptoms are the same for all patients
Asthma symptoms usually varies among patients, said an asthma specialist. Some of the common signs that most patients experience are coughing, heavy chest, and wheezing. Besides these symptoms, patients have also reported suffering from anxiety, rapid breathing, sleep problems, anxiety, and fatigue. Moreover, the symptoms can be mild or severe.

  • Regular exercise deteriorates the symptoms of  asthma
According to a medical survey, regular exercise is found to be beneficial in managing asthma.  Breathing and relaxation techniques improve lung function. However, it is advised to avoid strenuous physical activity as it can worsen asthma attacks.

  • Asthma improves with age
There is no relation between age and severity of asthma. Also, there is no cure for asthma. The condition can only improved by seeking timely treatment. If asthma is not treated properly during the early stage, the condition worsens.

  • Asthma cannot be life-threatening
If not treated, asthma attacks can prove to be fatal. Though rare, asthma flare-ups are life-threatening. People with asthma should be aware of the triggers and take necessary precautions to prevent severe attacks.

  • If there is no wheezing, it is not asthma
Wheezing refers to a whistle-like sound during breathing caused by the passage of air through a narrow passageway. Wheezing makes it difficult for the person to breathe. Sometimes, asthma is present even without the wheezing sound, says an asthma specialist. In severe asthma attacks, the wheezing sound is only heard using a stethoscope.
