Dealership Car Buying Negotiation Techniques
by Grand Prairie Grand Prairie RoadThe term “car negotiations” is a stomach churning utterance that often brings to mind visions of cheesy salesmen in cheap suites. For many of us, the gut wrenching experience of negotiating a car deal often leaves us feeling as though we’ve been violated or more plainly, ripped off! Nevertheless, there are ways to ensure you are not taken advantage of when you go looking for a new car. While even negotiating experts can’t guarantee a mistake free experience, there are tricks to navigating the car buying process that can help you avoid some of the more common auto insurance negotiation errors.
The Buddy System
There’s safety in numbers when you head to the Reliable Used Cars in Calgary, AB - Stampede Auto to look for a vehicle. Taking a friend or family member or two with you can help prevent being taken advantage of by dealership personnel. If nothing else, it’s nice to have the extra support there while you are making such a costly purchase and someone to rein you in should your purse strings become too loose. Having another set of eyes and ears there during the car buying process can also help you pick out issues with the vehicle, asks pertinent questions, and discover flaws in what the salesman has told you or has listed on a contract. This person can also act as verification of what you were told by the salesman or dealership should there be an issue after the fact.
Be Ready to Walk Away
Whether you’re desperate for a vehicle or not, don’t let on to the fact that you’re in a hurry to buy. Act as though there’s no big rush and that whether you come away from the lot with a vehicle or not, it makes no difference to you. There are plenty of used car dealerships desperate to sell their cars, so they are the ones who should be desperate. If the salesman isn’t playing ball, be prepared to leave. In the majority of cases, he needs you more than you need him, so act that way. If you don’t get a car today, so be it. There’s always tomorrow and there’s always another deal just around the corner.
Don’t Play Games
Toying with the salesman to get a better deal will often result in you thinking you’ve won when really you’ve lost. Just because you aren’t playing the salesman’s game doesn’t mean he’s falling for yours. Unless you are the one person out of a million who has caught an inexperienced salesman on the first day on the job, he probably isn’t falling for the tactics you’ve prepared in advance. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t negotiate, but don’t let yourself get so wrapped up in ‘winning’ the game itself that you forget what you’re there for in the first place. Remember, a salesman does this for a living; you do it once every couple of years or so. He’s probably played every game, heard every line, and listened to every story and excuse there is, so come in with a budget, stick to it, and be prepared to leave if things don’t work out.
