Da Vinci Painting

by Millie Palmer Writer

There are many famous paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci, and the fresco the Battle of Anghiari is a exquisite piece of art. The wall painting is situated in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. Leonardo Da Vinci chose the battle between Florentine and Milanese troops in 1440 and worked on the order from 1503 to 1506. Unfortunately, it is a lost painting by Leonardo Da Vinci, as the paints melted and then disappeared almost fully. However, another famous painter Peter Rubens has made a copy of the composition.

The fresco depicts the different emotions crafly presented by the author. The people in the work are overwhelmed by anger, hate and desire to win. The animals are the active participants of the battle, as one of the horses bit another. Leonardo Da Vinci emphasized that the most important thing in the fight was a banner. All parts of the composition, including the faces of people, swords, and horses are directed inside the battle. Despite the battle was a historic event, the clothes on the riders do not correspond to a concrete period of time and have any fantasy elements, for example, headdress on the one of the riders. The key weapon is the sword that one of the men is holding in his hand. The author had painted his work in the pastel colors. However, the basic target of the fresco was not the color or game of light and shadow, but the emotions.

While many painters in the Battle of Anghiari time idealized the battles and fighting, Leonardo Da Vinci has shown the real face of war. He did not pay attention to bright clothes or any romantic side of the struggle. The pain, unbearable suffering and madness force to think about the horrors of the war and its aftermath. The fresco does not have any decoration around, all our attention is riveted on the riders. The great painter judged the pointlessness of the war.

The exciting and significant element of painting is who will be the winner of the awful battle. In the real fight between Florentine and Milanese troops, the winners were Florentines. In my opinion, the end of the fighting on the mural by Leonardo Da Vinci is predictable as noone’s victory. It is impossible to know where the enemies are because both Florentine and Milanese look like one thing. The force that makes soldiers fight eventually will not yield any winners. The power and the spite shown through people attacking each other is the direct evidence.

In conclusion, despite the fact that the work was not finished and presented only in copies, still presents an actual topic. The modern world has many local military conflicts in the different parts of the world. The art always has a big influence on people and maybe the analyzed work of the art will make them think. In my opinion, the goal of the painting by Leonardo Da Vinci is to remind the humanity about the horros of a war.
