Cricket Bats - Making Smashing Balls Easier

by Rupa Aggarwal Analyst
In the pantheon of Sachin’s 100 centuries, perhaps the most talked about century is the one in Sharjah. A century made in the swirling dust, it came to be known as “The Desert Storm”. This century came in a time when cricket bats weren’t so springy. Yes, cricket bats have undergone a lot in the past few years and now you see batsmen like A.B. de Villiers and Chris Gayle swatting the ball left, right and centre. Sometimes, you wonder whether the bats of these batsmen are magical in nature, but ask them and they all tell you the same, “It’s the player and not the bat”. So next time you want to buy your son or yourself a bat, think of it as an essential equipment rather than a revered piece. That being said, selecting a cricket bat can be hard. Very hard. Most often or not, you end up with the wrong sized bat. And sometimes the wrong weight. But worry not, your days of blasting the ball out of the park is not going to be affected. Just keep in mind these simple steps and you are good to go, Mr. Future (insert name of your favourite batsman here).

Steps for choosing the right cricket bat
According to ICC, the governing body for cricket all over the world, a typical cricket bat’s length should not be more than 38 inches and the width should not exceed 4.25 inches. Taking that into account, here are the steps that you need to keep in mind.
Step 1 - Cricket bats are usually made from either English or Kashmir willow. There are five grades of willow, with 1+ representing the highest quality. Now, the wood grain differs from bat to bat. Typically a professional cricket bat comes with 6 to 12 grains, meaning the bat is made from the highest quality of willow. This is the ideal bat for anyone who wants to just whack a ball. But if you are looking for a bat that you can set according to your wishes, then go for ones with less than 6 grains. These bats take a long time to reach the ideal performance level.
Step 2 - Cricket bats are available in various sizes. For professional use, you can get custom sizes bats. For kids between ages 4 and 8, size 1 bats are ideal, while for kids between 11 and 15 size 6 is ideal. Kids above 15 and adults can use full-length bats.
Step 3 - Select bats from reputed brands such as SG Cricket Bats, Kookaburra, Adidas and GM. They offer good grip on the handle and they are durable also.
