Creative ways to teach kids to be energy efficient

by Brian W. Writer

We know that kids can be a bit of a burden on the energy bill when they don’t understand how to be energy efficient.

Here are our top 6 ways to make learning about energy efficiency fun:

1. Teach kids where energy comes from

As a family learn about where energy such as gas and oil come from, teach them what kind of energy the cooker uses, how the oil central heating system works and let them know that energy supplies are finite, and that they’re running out fast.

2. Use online games

Energy Kids is an online resource that can be used as a great way to make learning fun and interesting.

3. Try going energy free for a day

You can make this a fun yet challenging way to show your kids how much we all rely on energy. It will also help them to develop skills to figure out how to get by if electricity and energy are not available, teaching them to cut back on use when possible in their everyday lives. Choose electricity free games to play like board games instead of video games and instead of lights, use candles.

4. Lead by example

If you don’t turn off the light when you are leaving a room, it’s unfair to expect your children not to do the same. Overcome your own bad habits and then you can ask them to do the same.

5. In the garden

Instead of sitting inside and watching television, try and get your children to go outside. Perhaps enlist their help washing the car with a bucket of water instead of a hose or asking them to help putting the washing on the line instead of using the tumble dryer.

6. Get them involved

Why not try giving your child responsibilities, such as checking all the lights are turned off in the house before you leave or being in charge of the recycling, the more a child is involved, the more pride they’ll take in their achievements.
