COVID-19 Pandemic: 6 Tips to Take Care of Your Teeth

by Maher Medical Center Dental Clinic in Abu Dhabi
The outbreak of COVID-19 is hitting hard the whole world and the UAE government is also doing its best to keep the conditions in control. People are being advised to stay at home, work from home, and maintain social distancing. In such times, going out to visit dental clinics in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or other emirates for dental check up is not safe. But, don’t worry; we have got your covered.

While regular visits to the dentists are important for maintaining oral hygiene and keeping oral diseases at bay, you should also take care of your oral health to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Here are tips of what you can do to look after your teeth while you’re at home:

1. Brush your teeth twice a day
The first and foremost part of oral hygiene is to brush your teeth thoroughly every day two times for two to three minutes. In the morning, the best time is to brush teeth before having breakfast. However, in the night, it is best to brush your teeth before going to bed when you are sure that you are not going to eat anything, especially desserts. Use a brush with a small head for better access to back teeth and soft bristles to keep gums safe.

2. Use toothpaste with fluoride content
It is recommended to use fluoridated toothpaste because fluoride helps in reducing the demineralization process - the first stage of tooth decay. Even if a cavity is developing in your tooth, the fluoride can help in remineralizing that area and disrupting dental plaque, which is one of the causes of tooth decay and gum disease. Besides, a fluoridated tooth also helps in hardening tooth enamel.

3. Floss your teeth everyday
Regular use of floss assists in removing plaque and preventing the buildup of plaque. Flossing your teeth in a slow and gentle sawing motion prevents tooth decay and reduces the risk of gum disease caused by plaque.

4. Limit acidic drinks
Acidic drinks, like soft drinks, cordials, and fruit juices soften the core material of the tooth and dissolve the minerals present in tooth enamel. Consequently, excessive use of acidic drinks leads to cavities or caries in teeth. In severe cases, teeth are degraded right down to the gum. Thus, it is better to avoid acidic drinks as much as possible to protect your teeth enamel.

5. Limit sugary foods
Sugary food particles are the perfect feast for bacteria in our mouth. When bits and pieces of sugary food remain stuck between your teeth, bacteria present in dental plaque transform the sugar into acids, which again is very harmful for your teeth.

6. Save the knocked-out tooth
If you have a knocked out tooth, seeking immediate dental advice is necessary. Since it is not advisable to go out right this moment, you can talk to your dentist on the phone. If possible, wrap the tooth in plastic or place it in the milk and seek the dentist advice immediately through digital channels.

It’s better to make an appointment at nearby dental clinics in advance for any serious conditions or get in touch digitally. Stay orally healthy and stay safe.
