Following the Paris Summit and subsequent signing of the Paris Agreement in December of 2015, the global community is focused on developing greener initiatives to combat climate change and preserve Earth’s resources for future generations. Countries, states and neighborhoods are working to make solar technology available for residents, such as providing tax incentives for the use of hybrid or electric vehicles and solar power loans

On a larger scale, countries are boasting the days and percentages that they are able to run on renewable energy. One nation in particular stood out for its commitment to green energy in 2015: Costa Rica.

ZME Science reports that, “The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) announced that the country achieved “99 percent renewable electricity generation” this year, running 100 percent renewable in 285 days.” The achievement distinguishes Costa Rica as a pioneer of green energy and provides an example for other countries to follow as they gear up for their own greener initiatives following the Paris Agreement.

For other countries, achieving numbers even close to this would force the need to provide residents with more options for harnessing green energy at home—such as by utilizing solar power loans to make solar panels more affordable for homeowners.

ZME Science also noted the specific resources utilized to achieve this level of notoriety in Costa Rica: “The bulk of the electricity came from hydroelectric plants, taking advantage of the country’s climate and abundant rain, complemented by geothermal, wind, solar and biomass.” These renewable energies generated output for residential homes, as well as industrial buildings and the transportation industry.

In an effort to continually reduce Costa Rica’s use of other forms of energy, Ecowatch reports that in 2016 the Costa Rican transportation industry will focus on incentivizing the use of electric vehicles among residents and electrifying public transportation. Specifically, the company has plans to introduce an electric train that will integrate with the public bus system.

Despite Costa Rica’s success in 2015 with renewable energy, the rest of the global community still has a long way to go before being able to operate using 100 percent renewable energy on a daily basis. For individuals who want to make an impact within their own communities, solar power loans are a great option for making green living accessible and affordable. In many areas across the United States, solar power loans have already made a difference for businesses and communities.
