Common Reasons Why Your Canine Friend Won’t Eat

by Jenifer L. Content Writer, Web Developer,

If you're wondering why your dog has stopped eating, then you must be aware of these common reasons that could help you solve this problem out.

Dental disease

Among dogs, dental problems are very common. These problems frequently go unnoticed, as they lack the power to express the pain.

Gums that are swollen or bleeding are also an indicator of more severe underlying problems. The problems can escalate if left untreated. When eating, oral tumors, gingivitis, or periodontal disease may cause pain. This is particularly true if dry kibble is fed to your dog. With every bite, broken or loose teeth will ache, making the dog avoid their food.

Vaccinations

A temporary loss of appetite may be attributed to the side effects of certain vaccines. Be cautious and make sure he continues to drink plenty of water. There's no need to miss vaccines just because of this.  You should contact your vet to proactively prepare to help your pet through these very temporary side effects.

Travel And Unfamiliar Environments

If your dog's appetite was good before you went with them on a vacation or moved to a new place, this could be another reason that your dog won't eat. Some dogs may get motion sickness, and in unfamiliar environments, others become anxious or uncomfortable.

Getting Older

You can see a difference in their eating habits if your dog is getting older. An older dog might get less exercise and less energy to burn off. As a consequence, they eat less than usual.  Also, as your dog ages, they also get more picky about their food.

Make sure to consult your veterinarian as well. Dogs with medical problems would have to be on special diets. Sometimes there is no specific explanation why a dog stops eating. Be patient and hopeful as it can take some time to find out a way to get your dog to start eating more regularly.
