Commercial Photography – What To Know More?

by Oliver James Professional Commercial Photographer

Alfred Stieglitz once said,

“In Photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality.”

Photography is a vast world with loads of domains and branches but in the end, it is about capturing something unique while staying behind the lens. It is about viewing reality through your fantasy glasses. In current times, photography is not just a hobby, rather it has become a recognized profession where people earn from the images of beautiful moments they have captured.

If you are also into commercial photography, then you might understand the norms of the industry and how it works. Here if you wish to earn then you need to click what sells in the market or what can be sold if it catches the right eye. This is one field where commercialization doesn’t mean you can serve anything on the platter and people will accept it. Here you have to put life in a moment so that it can talk without words.

You can find a lot of information about commercial photography on the internet. The platform is filled with the basic guides to do’s and don’ts. However, some somethings can be learned from experience. You can understand the depth of the field either by talking to an experienced commercial photographer or by reading their views.

So here are some personal views of an experienced photographer, who has multiple decades of famous work under his belt.

• Before diving into the world of commercial photography, try to work under an experienced photographer from the field. This way you will understand the nitpicks which are never shared by anyone on a broader level or any platform. We all know some things are learned by only observing.

• To have a smooth-running photoshoot, you need to understand a few basic things and have to remember them all the time. There is always a to-do list, just here you can’t put it in your diary rather it should be engraved in your mind.

·      Understand the requirement: - You might have great ideas about the shoot but in the end, they are not important if they don’t fulfill the purpose. Hence talk to the client properly and understand what they need from this photoshoot. Once you know the requirement, then you can suggest your ideas accordingly.

·      Budget & Deadline: - Never forget to discuss the budget of the client and the deadline for submission. Innovative ideas bring innovative costs.  Most of the clients like to stay within the budget on a precautionary basis. So, don’t overdo it, else it will come out from your pocket.

·      Be prepared: - You already know the framework of the photoshoot by now.  So, get your equipment ready to win the day. Make sure you check all the equipment more than once before leaving for the shoot. A tip, “Be there before everyone and feel the place.”

·      Lighting: - Lighting plays the biggest role in a perfect picture. A raw-looking picture can be good if there is proper lighting. Therefore, check and then double-check, click sample images to find that right spot with the right lighting. You know it, that this spot only will give you the perfect pictures.

·      Subject is Important too: - Even though your subject can’t speak, it still is important. Prepare the subject exactly the way you want. In commercial photography, everybody knows that preparing the subject is more important than finding the right angle.

·      Observe and Focus: - In photography, every minute detail is important to make the picture-perfect. Hence, focus on every detail from every corner in every sense. This way you will understand your subject more than anyone else and can click the best picture at the same time.

• A lot of people believe that just pointing the camera and clicking is what all it takes to have great photos. But we know it better. Once you have the digital pictures in your system, the hard part starts. Reviewing and adding the finesse to the pictures is a must. Make sure to cover all aspects to capture and deliver beauty on paper.

In the end, just want to say that no matter which branch of photography you have picked just remember the words of Aaron Siskind -

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”
