Come A Long Way Since the Motorola DynaTac
There are all sorts of things that we can do with our phones today. They are amazing pieces of Technology considering we have only had cell phones since in 1973 a Motorola engineer named Marty Cooper bragged to his rival from the company Bell Labs that that he made the “first real handheld portable cellphone”. We have come a long way from that historic day to today where an iphone garage opener exists. The Motorola DynaTac was $4,000 in the early 1980s. This brick phone had 30 minutes of talk time and 8 hours of standby time and weighed 1.75 pounds.
In 1989 the cellphone slimmed down a bit and Motorola did it again with the MicroTac 9800X. This phone could fit in a jacket pocket albeit a large jacket pocket. In 1992 Nokia came out with the Motorola International3200. In 1993 Apple released the first PDA or personal digital assistant device. BellSouth also released a PDA/Phone combo the same year. In 1994 the next was by the pioneer of the cellphone again, Motorola and boasted the first digital radio system. Two years later a new phone came out that was priced at $1000. It could even receive text messages with later models being able to send them as well. Nokia followed with the Nokia8110 or more popularly called the “banana phone”. They took over the helm as the most popular cellphone manufacturer in 1998. In 1999 they started coming out with colorful faceplates and internal antennas.
In 2000 the first touchscreen in black and white came out which at the time was amazing technology. In 2001 the first monochromatic cellphone came out which made a few more colors than a black and white display. In 2002 technology made a giant leap with the first full color display on the Nokia 7650. It also featured the first camera phone taking pics at 0.3 megapixels that could be sent to computers to print. 2003 had the first inner and outer screen cellphones with the Samsung S300. The outside told you of calls and texts coming in and the inside had the majority of the features of the phone. In 2004 Motorola made a comeback with the slimmest phone on the market the V3. 2004 the Sony W800i a Walkman phone came on the market that users could listen to music on the go and could use a memory stick to carry music. 2006 began personalizing more with phones that suited individual tastes with sleek designs.
The revolutionary Apple IPhone came out in 2007 which changed the way cellphones were made. You could download and play apps on this phone. They have continued to come out with versions ever since and are now on the IPhone 6 which has a garage opener app. The Motorola Droid in 2020/ 2011 introduced the android systems and Samsung has tried to compete with the Galaxy coming out in 2013. Cell Phones continue to revolutionize and come up with more features.
