The ACC conference has for a long time been considered a basketball conference, with the best competition in men’s basketball.  College football wise, however, the ACC is certainly not something to laugh at.  The conference has increased its play a fair amount over the years and has now sent multiple teams to the national championship game.  With the talent that continues to come into that conference, there could be another ACC team heading to the college football playoff this season.

The top tier of the ACC seats perennial powerhouse teams, the Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers.  These two teams are expected to be ranked in the top ten every single season and compete for their conference’s title.  Other teams are starting to rise up, however, including the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Miami Hurricanes under new head coach Mark Richt.  Other teams in the conference has proven that they can surprise as well, teams such as Duke and Louisville have had better seasons then anticipated recently.

The one game in the ACC that everyone should watch is likely the Clemson vs. Florida State game.  Outside of that game, however, the more intense match may be the Seminoles taking on another opponent, the Miami Hurricanes.  Miami and Florida State have one of the biggest rivalries that dates back decades in the state of Florida.  Miami was able to put up a big fight last season against their Tallahassee rivals and that was a team with poor coaching.  Now under the leadership of one of the best coaches in college football, Miami should look to surprise the Seminoles this year.

The player worth paying attention to the most in the ACC has to be Pittsburgh running back James Conner.  Conner is a magnificent story, battling his way back onto the field after a season fighting Hodgkin lymphoma.  Prior to this devastating news, Conner was seen as one of the top running backs in all of football.  He ran for 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns as a sophomore.  He is now entering a redshirt junior season and will look to prove that he is still able to play at that high level.

If there is one coach to specifically watch in the ACC, it should be Duke head coach David Cutcliffe.  Cutcliffe has shown that he is capable of getting Duke into a competitive spot in the ACC and national college football rankings but since that one magical season, Duke has been an afterthought.  Cutcliffe has failed in some previous jobs and Duke could opt to go in a different direction if the team has another average season.

The ACC looks to be full of drama this season and should certainly be something to look forward to watching.
