Coir and Coconut Products For a Greener Tomorrow

by Samuel Joseph SEO Technician

Coir is a natural fibre extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products. According to statistics released in mid-2012 the value-added product trade value of coir fibre was around USD 140 million annually. And India and Sri Lanka account for almost 93% of this market, where India’s share was approximately USD 70 million and Sri Lanka’s share was approximately USD 60 million. Sri Lanka exports fibre amounting to more than 100,000 MT annually (brown fibre), and is rated as the largest supplier of brown fibre. Being the largest exporter of brown fibre, Sri Lanka is also popular for its value-added coir products which are coir mats, coir twine, brooms, rugs, brushes, geotextiles, and coir-based horticulture products (as coir pots, baskets, basket liners, seed trays, hanging baskets, weed control mats, coir poles, cocopeat briquettes, cocopeat discs, cocopeat bales, coconut husk chips, coir pads, etc.).  The coco peat products are 100% natural and renewable growing medium, and are extensively used in farms and greenhouses, for seed germination, landscaping, and as a substitute for peat moss and bark compost.

With the ever increasing global concern towards environmental pollution and to become a greener business; coir products address these ecological problems as they are produced using natural materials, do no harm to the environment, they are eco-friendly, biodegradable and they help/assist vegetation growth by trapping topsoil and keeping the nutrients intact. Organic substances are easy to use, there is no interaction between the medium and nutrients, they offer improved availability of nutrients to plants, and in general they provide better physical and chemical properties suitable for best plant growth. And an example for how beneficial the use of coir products is; the two most important coir products; geotextiles (these are coir-based matting materials placed in sloping lands and embankments to hold soil and permit vegetative growth) and fascines (these are tubular structures of coir mats or nets filled with dust, peat or coir resembling large rolls or gabions) have been credited with controlling steep and road slopes erosion in many countries.

As mentioned earlier coir products have been adopted whole-heartedly in agricultural activities, and this has paid rich dividends in organic farms around the world. Sri Lanka as the second largest coir product manufacturer has remained continuously updated with the latest demands in the market and has adopted the necessary technologies to fulfil customer requirement. Coir Range (Pvt) Ltd. is among the best coir product export companies in Sri Lanka, and their products provide the following benefits to their customers:

Provides cost reductions and makes the customer’s product prices look attractive vs. competitor products.
