Cleaning Your Washing Machine Detergent Cups

Ever open up your washing machine detergent compartment and look inside? No, I mean really look inside beyond the quick pour of a detergent or fabric softener. If you haven’t, you may be in for a ride. Those cups can get super moldy. And when I say super moldy, I mean super moldy.

How to Clean Your Washing Machine?

Now, I know what you’re thinking. How the heck do you even clean this stuff naturally?! Surely, you’ll have to dip it into some crazy chemical cleaner to get the gunk off. I’m going to debunk that myth for you right now so you can roll up your sleeves and get to work without having to run out to grab a special cleaner from the store. Before you start, look at your washing machine’s manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that you take the compartment tray out safely. If it has two or more parts to it when you pull it out, disassemble it so that you can wash everything out and get in between each crack. You won’t have to do this too often so if you clean it well and maintain it there won’t be too much of a buildup. Now, let’s get started!

Materials Required:

1/4 cup baking soda
1 cup white vinegar
Few drops dish soap
Stiff scrubbing brush
Bowl

Grab your bowl and add in your vinegar and baking soda. Now stand back in amazement and reminisce your childhood as you watch the vinegar start fizzling right when the baking soda hits it. Remember those good old science fair volcano projects from back in the day? This never gets old to me. Entertainment at its finest!

Add in a few drops of your favourite dish soap. The dish soap will give it that extra oomph you need to loosen up the mold and grime. That means that you can loosen up on the elbow grease application a little bit.

Grab that brush…ready…get set…SCRUB! You might be shocked at finding out how much dirt has built up in your detergent compartment. However, you might be even more shocked when you realize that this simple trick comprising of ingredients found right in your home can get rid of it without any harsh chemicals.

Do the same thing for all other parts of your detergent compartment. The great thing about using a stiff dish brush is that the fibers can get deep into the grooves that you can’t get into with a sponge or a cloth. Due to the force of your hand on the handle, the brush is also able to deliver more force and scrub away those tight spots. We’re very sciencey today, aren’t we?!

Voila! Take a step back and admire your handiwork! All in all, this took me 30 minutes from start to finish. No soaking or pre-treating involved.
