There are three main types of filters used for cleaning water in swimming pools and spas, namely sand filters, diatomaceous earth (DE) filters and cartridge filters. Nowadays, most pool owners prefer to use a  cartridge filter as it is easier to install, use and maintain, as compared to the other two types of pool or spa filters.
While water flows through the spa, filter removes dirt particles and other debris from it and sends them to the skimmer box. Micron is the measuring unit for size of particles. A smaller number of microns denotes smaller particle size. A spa filter thus needs to have a low micron rating. This way it can effectively remove small debris particles from spa water. L A Spa filters are a very good choice in this aspect.

About Spa Filter Cartridge
The way a cartridge filter cleans spa water is similar to the way other filters do. Only difference is that it uses a cartridge instead of sand or diatomaceous earth for filtration. Cartridge of a spa filter is  cylindrical in shape. It is mostly made up of polyester. There are numerous pleats on the cartridge filter. These pleats act as filtering media, trapping dust particles and other debris in spa water. As spa water passes through the cartridge continuously, dirt gets deposited on it. This in turn decreases the micron rate of the cartridge. With accumulation of dirt, particles of smaller size get trapped in the cartridge. The impurities are later disposed off through drainage line. While other types of filters need to be back washed regularly, there is no such requirement for cartridge filters. Moreover spa filter replacement is very simple when you use cartridge filters.

Maintenance of spa filter cartridge
For a spa filter cartridge to last for a long time, proper maintenance is necessary. Following are some important measures for that:
  • Rinse your spa filter cartridge at least once in a week. Hose it thoroughly from top to bottom.
  • Monitor pressure levels regularly. Optimal value of pressure in a spa filter is 8 to 10 lbs. If pressure rises above this value, it indicates that your spa filter cartridge is clogged with dirt, and needs to be cleaned.
  • Clean the cartridge with a filter cleaning solution once in every two weeks. Dip in a bucket containing the solution overnight. Then scrub it carefully with brush.
  • Every time you clean a cartridge, check it for cracks, tears or any other damage. Replace the cartridge if it is damaged. The same needs to be done if your cartridge is too old.
