Chronic Ankle Sprain and Instability Treatment

Ankle sprains are very common injuries. There's a good chance that while playing as a child or stepping on an uneven surface as an adult sprained the ankle. Sometimes, it is an awkward moment when we lose balance, but the pain quickly fades away and we go on the way. But the sprain could be more severe; ankle might swell and it might hurt too much to stand on it. If it's a severe sprain, might have felt a "pop" when the injury happened. A sprained ankle means one or more ligaments on the outer side of the ankle were stretched or torn. If a sprain is not treated properly, means this is long-term problems. Typically the ankle is rolled either inward (inversion sprain) or outward (eversion sprain). Inversion sprains cause pain along the outer side of the ankle and are the most common type. Pain along the inner side of the ankle may represent a more serious injury to the tendons or to the ligaments that support the arch and should always be evaluated by a doctor.

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in children. Ankles are made up of three bones with ligaments (tough, stretchy tissue which hold the bones together). The ligaments help stop the ankle joint from moving around too much. Ligaments are tough bands of tissue that help connect bones together. Three ligaments make up the lateral ligament complex on the side of the ankle farthest from the other ankle. They are the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL). The common inversion injury to the ankle usually involves two ligaments, the ATFL and CFL. Normally, the ATFL keeps the ankle from sliding forward, and the CFL keeps the ankle from rolling inward on its side.

Anklet comfeel is a next generation product, to provide mild compression, warmth and support to the ankle joint. It is used to allay pain and inflammation, generally associated with old age, arthritis or injury. Knitted on 3 dimensional computer controlled circular looms, it conforms to the complex anatomy of the ankle with exactness.Tynor Anklet Comfeel

Ankle Instability Symptoms:
Sprained ankles often result from a fall, a sudden twist, or a blow that forces the ankle joint out of its normal position. Ankle Support commonly occur while participating in sports, wearing inappropriate shoes, or walking or running on an uneven surface. Pain is usually felt around the ankle joint itself although more specifically on the outside of the ankle where the damaged ligaments are located. Swelling or bruising may present immediately or may take up to 48 hours to develop (depending on the types of structures damaged and the severity of the sprain). It should also be noted that in milder cases, this may never appear at all.

Ankle sprains usually happen when there is a sudden movement or twist, and often when the foot rolls over. A sudden movement or twist can overstretch the ligaments, causing tears and bleeding (which shows as bruising and swelling) around the ankle joint. These movements are more likely to happen when a person is running, jumping or quickly changing direction in sports such as basketball, netball or football.

Sometimes ankle sprains occur because of a person is born with weak ankles. Previous ankle or foot injuries can also weaken the ankle and lead to sprains. The signs of an ankle sprain can include:
  • pain or tenderness
  • swelling
  • bruising
  • coldness or numbness in the foot
  • inability to walk or bear weight on the joint
  • stiffness

Prevention From Ankle Sprain:
The first option is to strengthen all the muscles around the lower leg, especially a muscle group known as the peroneals. These muscles run down the fibula on the outside of the leg and attach on various areas of the foot. Stronger peroneals can minimize the amount of inversion reducing the chance for injury. Also, improving the flexibility of the calf muscles and proprioceptive training should be a part of any ankle-strengthening program. These are done by stretching the calf and balancing on one leg at a time. People whose feet pronate (roll in and flatten) while running should wear a shoe that limits pronation. Treatment for a sprained ankle aims to reduce the pain and swelling, and to make sure ankle can maintain or get back to its usual range of movement as soon as possible. It can be frustrating, but it may take several months to recover from a sprained ankle. In some cases it may be a year or more. So we may need to be patient, and follow treatment advice carefully.
