Choosing Video Production Houses: How to Differentiate the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
by Rex Danyluk Creative HandbookProducing a film or a video may not be
as simple as it sounds. There is so much to do- right from scripting,
auditioning, hiring crew, securing locations and getting props to the final
production, editing, marketing and distribution. There are many pre-production,
production and post-production
houses that strive to make the entire procedure easier for you. But how
to ensure that the production house you are choosing is the right choice? Here
are 5 things to consider whilechoosing a production house:
Company portfolio: This is by far the simplest thing that
you can do while examining potential production companies. Once you go through
their portfolio, you get a fair idea about the quality of work you should
expect from them. You need a company that not only shares your vision but also
shares your style. Go through their website and look for samples of their work.
It is always recommended to choose a company that has a diverse portfolio. The
more variety you find in their work, the better, as this ensures they have an
experience of dealing with different genres and niches.
Professionalism:Make it a point to visit their office
in person or talk to their executives before ending up with one. If they care
about your project they will show interest in knowing more about your project.
They will ask you questions related to your project and give you suggestions on
what you can do to make it a success. When you speak to them you get a pretty
good idea whether it is only about the money or they genuinely care for your
business.
Budget:If you have found a company that is
interested in the type of video you want to create but is charging over the
odds, you should probably reconsider your decision. However, this doesn’t mean
that you have to compromise with quality for price. A good company will tell
you in advance what you should expect in that budget rather than making false
promises and unrealistic claims. Ask them about a breakdown of the costs so
that you know where you are spending and how much. This will help you cut back
on areas that are unnecessary.
References:Having a track record of the company
you are planning to work with is again a must. You know you are investing in
the right place if the video production company has a huge list of happy and
satisfied customers. Get reference of a few clients they have worked with
recently who had similar projects and the same budget as yours. Call those
clients and ask them about their experience of working with the company.
Experience: How long the company has been in the
business of producing videos? Make sure that the company you choose has been
long enough in the industry to understand the nitty-gritty of producing videos.
If not, move on and look for another production house. Many of these production
houses also offer event
production rentals like sound, lighting and projection systems, staging
systems and décor items. Choose a company that meets all your needs and your
deadline but within your budget.
