Choosing ‘The One’: Finding the Right Photographer for Your Wedding
Your wedding photographers are meant to see your wedding very closely so that you get a complete picture of your day. He or she captures the candid moments and the small gestures and the subtle expressions that make up the story of your wedding day. It is important that you are confident about the photographer you’ve chosen so you can relax, knowing that he or she will give you just what you want.
We’ve outlined a few steps to make sure you can go through the procedure of choosing without getting overwhelmed by the options:
Step 1 - Figure out what you want: This has to happen even before you begin browsing through listings of wedding photographers. Some say that wedding photography is about capturing how the event feels, through pictures. Ask yourself what you want from your pictures, then do a little digging online and choose the style that suits this idea best. There are a variety of styles available from documentary styles, fine art style, candid wedding photography, portraiture and much more. Once you’ve figured out what you want, it should be much easier to shortlist a few.
Step 2 -Start looking early: For events that are planned in the middle of wedding season, it is said that you should begin looking for photographers a year in advance, as most are pre-booked. After you’ve settled on a venue, get this process started. For those tying the knot off-season, you can relax things by 6 months.
Step 3 - Check out photographer portfolio: Start only by looking through the portfolios of photographers who specialise in the style that you need. (For instance, you want candid photography, choose from best candid wedding photographers) Set the bar high – if you didn’t love his or her website or photographs at first sight, you’re probably not going to like what you get. Work on personal recommendations and look at reviews that previous brides and grooms have left behind to get a sense of the photographer. Shortlist a set of 5 photographers whose work you just LOVE and stick with them.
Step 3 – Clear the air and ask questions: Don’t be bashful, ask your photographer all the questions that have been nagging you - How many photographs do you get? What are your rights over those images and how much is it going to cost you? Can they do post production as well? What’s included in the package? How long does this take? Your photographer will be just as glad to have all the information laid bare.
Step 4 - Meet and greet: The best way to tell if you have the right photographer is by meeting them face-to-face. Have a meal together, sit down and talk. Besides making conversation about their work, you could also be talking about other matters – if it’s easy for you to build a rapport with them – they’re probably right for you.
