Have you recently adopted a lovable little feline and are pondering what name would be ideal? Many people simply pick a name they like and leave it at that. In any case, cat lovers such as myself, usually put more thought into it.

Some cat owners just wish to choose based on the gender of your cat.  If this is the case, you can simply look through a list of male cat names or female cat names.

When selecting a name for your kitten, it is useful to first investigate what breed they are. Your cat's breed may influence the name you wish to give him or her.  For instance, if your cat is a Japanese bobtail, perhaps you might want to search for Japanese cat names.

Coat pattern and color are also of significance. Many cat owners like to name their cat based off of the pattern of the coat. For instance, white cats regularly get names like Raven or Mignight, while more suitable names for white cats may be Ivory, Opal or Snowball.

Cats with black and white mixed coats are often given names such as Oreo, Zebra or Dice. Siamese cats, which is a breed that originated in Thailand, are commonly given Thai names. If your cat is a Siberian Forest breed, you may consider names such as Boris or Olga.

Obviously, you also need to consider the identity of your kitten. Is your he or she calm or hyperactive, aggressive or timid? Is your cat friendly?  Lazy?  Lovable? Naming a clumsy cat Royal, for instance, simply doesn't quite work.

Something else to consider is whether or not you might be interested in a unisex cat name.  It is a common practice for parents to choose unisex names for their children and the practice is becoming popular with cat owners as well.  Some examples of unisex cat names include Bisquit, Cotton and Onyx. Others lean towards more feminine or masculine names, for example, Fifi, Princess, Butch or Tank.

Some people like to name their felines after well known characters. I have seen cats with the names Garfield and Heathcliff. I have also seen cats named after famous dogs such as Snoopy or Lassie.  Choosing a famous cat's name is a good way to easily and effectively capture the essence of that particular character and transfer that same feeling to your feline.

On the other hand, you may be searching for unique feline names. This practice definitely is becoming increasingly common.  Here is a rundown of a few of the most unique names I have run across:

Birkenstock

Cognac

Tupac Shakat

Chairman Meow

Whiteboard

Chief Wigglebottom

Adidas

Quiggles McJiggles

Wig Wag

Kung Fu Kitty

Calypso

iPod Cat

These are only a few examples . There are numerous places online where you can search for lists of cat names or random name generators. You can likewise try using science fiction name generators if you want a truly one of a kind name.

Another increasingly popular practice is to choose cat names from other languages, such as Japanese cat names or French cat names. For instance, if your cat is black, you may be wish to name him or her the Japanese or French word for black.

Another popular choice is to pick ancient Egyptian cat names. Why do individuals do this? Because no culture in history worshiped and regarded felines as much as the old Egyptians did. the also really enjoyed solving animal riddles! The Egyptians respected the feline's composure and elegance and its ability to help to keep vermin under control.

Taking into account the cat's personality, coat and breed, as well as, your own personal preferences, you should be able to come up with a basic profile for what type of name you are looking for.  From there, you can go to a site such as Cat Names City and choose a name according to the criteria you've laid out.

I wish you link in your search for the perfect name for your new kitten!
