The advent of modelling by children in India has not been a rushed avalanche of pictures of children in advertisements but, a gentle increase over the years. The number of ads we see with children has been rising steadily, and over the years the quality of ads and the expertise in making the ads has increased phenomenally. Child models in India have in the last few decades become smarter and better actors than ever before, and they have been partly responsible for the greater visibility of goods for targeted towards children.

Becoming a Child Model:

Any child modelling agencies in Delhi and Mumbai or elsewhere will pick the models from the children who apply or from schools and plays and playgrounds.  Parents who feel that their children can become models send their child’s photograph to the modelling agencies and also samples of their work. The agencies also keep a lookout for children on their own hoping to be able to contact and enlist any child who shows potential.

Preparing to be a Child Model:

Child models in India can prepare themselves by firstly getting photographs taken by a professional portfolio photographer. This is probably the most important initial step take by an aspiring model, because it is these photographs which will give them the entry into the modelling world. They should also be prepared for long hours, for tedious photo shoots and be able to smile or laugh when the directors ask them to. This is not easy, but most child models in India are able to do this with equanimity.

After the child has been signed on with an agency, they take care to groom the child correctly and make sure that they know how to act and emote in front of the cameras. The children are taught how to smile correctly and how to display certain emotions.

Getting Assignments:

Child modelling agencies are responsible for getting the assignments for their clients. They match the customer’s requirements with the abilities of the children and make sure that the role and the looks match what the model is able to provide. The modelling agency clears the contracts, fixes the rates and terms for the contract. The agency is responsible for publicizing and for providing greater visibility for their young models.

Completing The Assignments:

It is important that the guardians realise that the child’s modelling career should not supersede his or her education. All modelling assignments should be done in conjunction with school timings and programs.  The child should remain grounded and should not get hassled or develop a strong ego about his abilities and looks. There is a major role played by parents in this case, since they have to supervise the upbringing of the child and they should be with him at all times to make sure that he is treated well and that he treats others with respect and dignity.
