Chen Yifei’s four players
by Winnie Jack ArtistChen
Yifei is an outstanding oil painter in China. He was born in Ningbo, a tranquil
city in Zhejiang province. During 1960s and 1970s, he created well-known oil
paintings including Thinking of History
from My Space, Eulogy of the Yellow River and Seizing of the Presidential
Palace. He was living in America during 1980s and devoting himself to
researches and creations of Chinese oil paintings. After many years of
unremitting efforts, he achieved great distinction and became well-known both
at home and abroad.
The most striking feature of Chen Yifei’s oil
painting is that most of his works are filled with peace and tranquility and
with traditional Chinese aesthetic value in the
infiltration of realism. Whether description of the scenery of Yangtze River
Delta or vivid portrait of young women, they all reflect Chen’s pursuit --- he
used the western skills to give the paintings Chinese spirit.
One of his masterpiece Four Players, created in 1988, is considered as a perfect
representation of his music series. Four
players expresses the unity of thought and feeling among four female
quarter musicians totally absorbed in the world of their music. Their long,
thick hair, tender skin and dedicated look are almost true to life. Every
detail of the figures intensifies a tranquil sense of sculptural beauty. The precise
composition and soft lines create a harmonious atmosphere. Apart from being a
work of realism, the painting also possesses deep connotation and a unity of
form and spirit.
A
bold use of black background produces breathtaking effect of dramatic scenes,
like western realism oil paintings, which allows people dispose themselves in a
concert hall. The painter concentrated light on people’s faces to highlight
facial contour shape, facial expression and exquisite body movement.
Chen
Yifei’s paintings of musicians convey his pursuit of the underlying relations
between things and his exploration of the connection between music and
painting. His paintings reflect his pursuit of aesthetic and appreciation of
diverse cultures. The difference between eras and people’s life experience lead
to different understandings of beauty. However, people can still find
themselves on a journey to explore beauty. Chen’s paintings help people find
their way into their souls, and even more, they are honored as a cultural
bridge between East and West.
