Change the workplace to attract millennials

by Groshan Fabiola I try to cover as many topics as I can

Millennials constitute approximately 80 per cent of the workforce. By 2020, they will rule the total number of employees. Millennials are the future. Why? Because they are highly educated, aren’t rapidly drained of energy, and demonstrate creative skills and innovation. In spite of this fact, organisations don’t succeed in meeting their employment expectations. In other words, they can’t attract, retain, and motivate the cool millennials or younger workers for that matter. Previous methods of enticing and rewarding the workforce don’t work anymore as it seems. Young people in their 20s or 30s are a little bit uneasy, which makes them even harder to recruit. If your business is ready to attract generation Y, then you’ll have to change the way you do things. In what follows, we have listed the top tips that you can use to make a more attractive workplace. If you don’t adapt your enterprise to meet the demands of the millennial generation, your business is doomed to fail.

Design a more flexible work environment

A competitive salary isn’t as important as having considerable flexibility in the job. Generation Y strongly asks for flexible work schedules and it’s not hard to understand why. They are looking forward to achieving a work-life balance. The children of boomers understand that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a must. They take good care of themselves, so ensuring physical and mental health is their primary concern. Millennials aren’t like the working professionals of the past who would get into their vehicles, commute a long distance to work, and leave the office late at night. The point is that they aren’t willing to work any time or every day. Employers ought to offer the generational demographic cohort following generation X the liberty to enjoy a flexible work schedule. Allow them to work from home, provide time to think, and be attentive about events that take place out of the office.

Embrace new design features

The office space can attract and retain the best and the brightest of employees. Many English companies have resorted to changing the interior design of the office space so as to create relaxation and homely zones. They go straight to printed glass manufacturers for their projects. Glass, as opposed to other materials, creates a more positive office environment. How can this be helpful? Well, this is very appealing to millennials. If your office doesn’t look like a place that the children of Baby Boomers want to work, you know what to do. In order to make the office more appealing for millennials, provide more transparency. The MTV generation prefers open atmospheres, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that glass is the preferred material when it comes down to designing places of business. Another element to focus your attention on is natural light. Lighting increases productivity, therefore being a workplace necessity. Think about it.

Integrate digital innovation

Employers have no choice but to adopt the latest technologies. If there is one thing that makes millennials stand out of the crowd, that is the use of technology. These people have embraced the digital life from early childhood. They like new platforms, such as Instagram and Snapchat. As a matter of fact, the older generations don’t even use them. They are more interested in things like printing on glass. Generation Y is more likely to accept a job in a company that deploys the same technologies that they do. Young people in their 20s and 30s are avid users of mobile devices and Internet technology and they expect technology in the workplace. If technology is lacking in the workplace, then you have a big problem on your hands. It’s necessary to have tomorrow’s technology to ensure that the office is running neatly. Concentrate your energy on creating a digital hub where everything is brought into one place. Investing in technological hardware and software is worth it.

Offer opportunities for growth

The children of Baby Boomers often say that career progression is a top priority. Millennials don’t want to work pointlessly for the rest of their lives. What they want is to climb the career ladder and be proud of their employer. Taking into consideration the fact that the circumstances are improving, there is an even greater emphasis on rapid progression among these pros. Your organisation needs to offer employees the chance to expand their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Understand that individuals don’t want to spend years working in the same job and doing the same things over and over again. They want to begin the day with the assurance that there are opportunities for growth and development. Millennials need to reach their full potential and they will refuse a workplace that doesn’t allow them to do that.

Start supporting charity

Corporate philanthropy is good for business. At least, this is what the experts say. Taking actions to improve the community, as well as society, has many advantages like market development and generating good vibes. It’s not necessary to look far to find examples of companies that make philanthropic donations. Are you one of them? If the answer is no, that is disappointing. A philanthropic positioning can help you attract millennials. Young people in their 20s and 30s are preoccupied with what is right and fair. Even if they don’t have too much money, millennials give to charity. And you should be doing the same thing. Partner with a non-profit organisation or donate your unused stock. It will make a world of a difference.

Final considerations

It seems like everyone wants to hire millennials these days. Generation Y is full of new and exciting ideas, so you’ll not be seeing limitations. The thing about the children of Baby Boomers is that they have grown up in a world that is constantly changing. In addition to bringing fresh perspectives, millennials are very loyal. More specifically, they don’t change jobs unless they have to. Young people in their 20s or 30s create long-lasting relationships. So, what are you waiting for? Do your best to win them over.
