Since the beginning of film/video production, various special effects techniques have developed, but in the last ten years everything has been moving towards CGI computer generated effects. The question that must be answered is: are the computer generated video effects better than the old fashioned photography effects?

The simple answer that most video/film fans will give is no, and the reason for that is the fact that they do not look at real as the old fashioned photography/film effects. So why then do the studios favor these new techniques?

The simple answer is that these new computer generated video effects are easier to control because if an effects is not quite right first time around, you can tweak it till it is. With the old fashioned film effects, if an effect is not right, you have to start the entire process again. This control allows the studio to keep the film on schedule which means they can get a return on investment on time (obviously if the studio is borrowing money to make a film, they want to pay that loan back as soon as possible in order to keep the debt repayments as low as possible).

The schedule is also important because the longer people are working on a film the longer you have to pay them and the studio they are shooting in.

A great example of why this is so important is the first Star Wars film, which was over a year late coming out because the special effects were not ready. This added to the cost of the film to the extent that the Fox board of directors almost shut the film down several times. In fact if it was not for the strength of character of Alan Ladd Junior they may not have ever even been a Star Wars.

Special effects supervisor George Main said "we are not making wedding videos here, films are extremely expensive pieces of art to make, a five percent increase in the cost of a film can means ten of millions of dollars.

As mentioned above, movie fans prefer the look of the old fashioned film effects because they simply look more real, compared to the computer generated effects, which can very often look like a sophisticated animation, but this means very little to the major studios who's main aim by far is making money.
