An individual has to clear an exam to become a Certified Public Accountant in the United States. The abbreviation for Certified Public Accountant is CPA. The aspiring candidates have to clear the Uniform Certified Public Accountant examination. However, the exam also has certain criteria which the candidate has to satisfy in order to take up the exam. The candidate must compulsorily have a bachelor’s degree of four duration. Duration of one hundred and fifty semester hours is also a must mandatory. People with a master’s degree are also eligible.

The candidates are rigorously tested on four areas. The four areas are namely ‘Audit and Attestation’, ‘Financial Accounting and Reporting’, ‘Regulation’ and ‘Business environment and Concepts’. On successfully clearing the exam the candidate becomes a CPA. Certain states in the country also require the candidate to gain work experience apart from clearing the exam. CPAs ensure safety of financial data, help in tax planning. They also offer advice pertaining to financial planning or investments. CPAs are considered to adhere to the standards for attesting financial documents.


The CPAs are well known for their prowess and education. So, their job is respected and high paying. The fact being that clearing the CPA exam itself is difficult. When candidates gain more experience or education after clearing the exam, they become eligible for even higher salary. Certified Public Accountant salary also depends on the region where the person offers his or her services. For instance, of the CPA works in a metropolitan city then he is generally paid more.
