Throughout history, they would only reserve a caviar for royalty – or simply finer tuned taste buds. Still, you can find and enjoy both accessible and affordable caviar,  just as much as rare and expensive caviar. If you want to order caviar online, Caviar Emporium is your one stop shop. Serving caviar and other specialty foods, we cater to provide an affordable option for subtle tastes.

From wild American to farm-raised Siberian, caviar is truly a unique experience. The word caviar comes from the Turkish word khavyar. It first developed in the English language in the late 16th century. It began with sturgeons: for millions of years, it has been a part of the Middle Eastern and Eastern diet.

Caviar was one served as a free appetizer in bars to encourage drinking, due to its salty nature. While once served exclusively to royalty, it was routinely served in America as free lunch in saloons. It was an incredible driver for business and enhanced sales. The sturgeon, at the time, was abundant in American waters. Henry Schacht noted this and set up a business exporting caviar to Europe. At the time, it had an expensive price tag of $1 per pound. Because of his success, the United States became the largest exporter of caviar in the world.

Even more prestigious at that time Russian caviar was the most coveted type of caviar on the market. However, much of the "Russian caviar" exported to the United States was from the U.S. Sellers would sell American sturgeon caviar worldwide, and it would, in turn, be sold back with the Russian label. Unfortunately, this boom caused the American Sturgeon to be fished nearly to extinction.

Because of this near mistake, caviar companies, such as the first Romanoff Caviar Company, turned to other forms of caviar. They found salmon roe (red salmon caviar), lumpfish, and in the last 40 years, whitefish (known as golden whitefish caviar). These have become more conservative counterparts and saved the sturgeon from overfishing.

Caviar is primarily marketed for finer tastes and pairs best with specialty foods, such as paté and fois gras. Caviar Emporium holds a guarantee of freshness for all our products. The caviar you purchase from Caviar Emporium is truly made to order and packaged just before it ships. Treat yourself and take advantage of free shipping on orders over $100, for local orders; a $35 flat fee for regional.
