Of all methods of translating graphic designs onto apparel, the technique of using discharge ink is the most important and versatile of all. This way of introducing a certain design to a certain apparel involves a lot of chemical reactions in the areas where the ink is applied. The styles and patterns produced by these chemical reactions are actually the result of an extensive process of destruction of the original manufacturer dye and its replacement by the pigment present in the ink.

But, because of environmental concerns involved with the use of such powerful chemicals, biotechnology has now extended its helping hand to come up with natural ways of producing patterns on apparel by using enzymes. These biochemicals can be implemented to trigger specific reactions which account for results similar to those achieved by following general methods of textile designing.

What is the nature of the chemical usually present in the dye?

The method of discharge screen printing involves the use of certain chemicals, which may be oxidising agents or reducing agents, acids, alkalis and a variety of salt forms. But, the prime chemical which makes the technique feasible is a salt of Formaldehyde Sulphoxylate and Thiourea. Although it is a powerful bleaching agent, this ingredient is also an equally potent toxin and readily produces Formaldehyde, a carcinogen that can cause nasal sinus cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer. Thus, such potential reasons of environmental and health hazards have raised a lot of safety concerns and encouraged the use of enzymes instead of this particular chemical for eco-friendly custom t shirt printing purposes.

Which enzyme suffices this need?

The toxic carcinogen has been replaced with Horseradish peroxidase (HRP), an enzyme naturally found in the roots of Horseradish and widely used in a variety of biochemical and biotechnological experiments and laboratory tasks. Custom screen printing of apparel using HRP is feasible because the enzyme catalyses an oxidation reaction of a lot of substrates when mixed with hydrogen peroxide.

How durable are the designs produced with HRP?

The enzyme helps in producing highly durable patterns, that carry an excellent color fastness and resist washing and harsh weather conditions with efficiency. Also, the absorbance of the fabric remains unharmed, when HRP is used instead of other toxic chemicals.

Biochemistry and biotechnology have gifted mankind with amazing tools which can be used not only for their benefits, but also for the safety of the environment. Cheap tshirts printing techniques followed by the textile industry have also felt this need big time and have embraced such natural ways as tools of decorating modern apparel. This is because, along with the elimination of Formaldehyde, the harmful toxic carcinogen, there are other advantages of using HRP like saving of energy and reduction of loss of breaking strength of the fabric used. Also, with such fantastic technology around, market sustenance for these industries has become a lot easier, better and more convenient.
