Carol Vorderman Opens New £12m Aviation Academy In Norwich

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

If there’s anything that an Aviation Recruiter loves to see, it’s a good supply of well-trained candidates for the sector’s many wide-ranging and challenging jobs. It is in order to provide such training that the International Aviation Academy – Norwich (IAA-N) has been established at Norwich Airport, with no less than TV presenter Carol Vorderman on hand to formally open it.

Ms Vorderman, best-known for her former role on long-running TV show Countdown, was present on Saturday 5th August to cut the ribbon in her capacity as Honorary Group Captain of the Air Cadets. She was accompanied by the cadets’ commandant, Commodore Dawn McCafferty.

What makes the academy so significant?

The £12m academy is the first skills academy to be set up by Aviation Skills Partnership (ASP), and has been described as the first of its kind in the world. It also boasts 20 classrooms, five engineering workshops and a full-size operational aeroplane on which students can learn their craft as pilots, engineers and cabin crew.

Simon Witts, ASP chief executive, commented: “This is a world first – it’s the first time that the training required for aviation has been brought together in one building.

“We class Norwich as one of the birthplaces of aviation in the UK. 100 years ago, Norwich was busy building 5,000 aircraft for the First World War effort.

“The aviation industry is a viable one in Norfolk and this is a great opportunity to build on that.”

The academy is a joint venture between ASP and Norfolk-based services company Norse Group, and 500 16 to 21-year-olds are expected to study at the site at its peak, on 26 different courses.

Ms Vorderman, for her part, is an enthusiastic pilot herself, having recently realised her childhood dream of earning a pilot’s licence.
