According to me a school student should first of all take some time out to think about his likes and dislikes. Also he should challenge himself and must acquire the tasks which are beyond his limits. This very advice will help him a lot as every student can perform good in his own comfort zone but curiosity is when a student participates in a new thing. 

Thirdly, he should voluntarily do the things in class and be unique in his own way. A student should never try imitating others as we know that "EVERY CHILD IS SPECIAL". Every student thinks in a different way making every idea better. 

Fourthly, a student must follow his/her own path in life without thinking about other children's as every children have their different tastes in life and different thinking process. For example - It's not necessary that if a friend of yours is great in maths, so you should stop liking science and focus on math's. But you can take your friends guidance to improve your maths as well.

Also, a school student should never stop learning as it is an ever-green process but yes, do remember "half-a-knowledge is very dangerous". So a student must gain full knowledge regarding the content as that would increase the confidence to speak in public.

Last but not the least, it's never too early nor too late to get organized and begin making plans.
