Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will return to the
ring on September 17th, and it's looking more and more like it won't be
against Gennady Golovkin. CANELO VS GOLOVKIN
Despite
all the talk about the superstar matchup between Canelo Alvarez and
Gennady Golovkin, the bout seems a million miles away at the moment.
After Canelo knocked out Amir Khan, the two men and their camps both
stated that they were willing to get a deal done. But Canelo dropped the
WBC belt, it was awarded to Triple G, and no real negotiations have
taken place since then.
So with that in mind, it has been announced by Golden Boy that Canelo will return to the ring on September 17th.
According
to Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez (by Ring TV via Bad Left Hook), they are
looking at three locations for the fight - MSG in New York, AT&T
Stadium in Arlington, and the MGM in Vegas. They actually have a hold on
AT&T.
The
reason for the three different locations comes down to possible
opponents. If they can somehow get a deal done with Golovkin (and Gomez
says they will sit down with promoter Tom Loeffler to try to work one
out...I'm not holding my breath on that), AT&T Stadium is a natural
fit. If that doesn't work and they try to set up a rematch with Miguel
Cotto, MSG is the best location as Cotto is a huge draw in New York.
Finally,
if it's someone else, they'll just go back to the old confines of the
MGM. They claim that they're looking at everyone from 154 to 160 pounds
as a possible opponent.
Golden Boy continues to push that Alvarez wants Golovkin:
"He
wants the Golovkin fight. We want to make it. We know it's a big fight.
We know it's the next mega-fight. And if it's the right deal, we're
going to make it happen. If it's a great deal to face Golovkin — and
it's too good of an offer to pass up — then you know what? We're going
to take a hard look at it and see if we can make it happen."
I'll believe it when I see it. At any rate, we will see Alvarez back on Mexico's Independence Day weekend. http://www.canelo-vs-golovkin.com/
