Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan, better known as “Canelo”; He is one of the best Mexican boxers that have existed in the last decade. This 30-year-old young man, who was born in the city of Guadalajara, State of Jalisco, Mexico; He has imposed himself in the world of boxing, winning the title of champion in four different categories.

Son of Ana Maria Barragan and Santos Alvarez Barragan, he was born on July 18, 1990. Along with his six brothers and sisters, he grew up in the city of Juanacatlan. There he began to call him the life of a boxer because his brother Rigoberto also practiced the sport.


His nickname was given by his manager José “Chepo” Reynoso, who at first started calling him Canelito, but later changed it when he began to grow professionally.

His life in the boxing world began at the age of 13; when he saw the passion for gloves when he saw the debut of his brother Rigoberto. This caused him to start training at the gym where he met his manager; who trained him in his adolescence and gave him all the support in difficult moments.

Professional debut

"Canelo" debuted for the first time on October 29, 2005. After four rounds he beat his rival, Abraham González, by technical knockout.

In 2008, Alvarez won the World Boxing Association (WBO) welterweight title by beating Carlos Adan Jerez. A year later, he won the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) welterweight belt; and that same year he won the WBO Latin welterweight title. But it wasn't until 2011 that he earned his first world super welterweight title after beating Mattew Hatton at the age of 20.

Since then, his growth as a professional boxer has been increasing; he went so far as to break a sports record by winning 51 fights; tied at two and suffered only one loss to another of the great boxers (and now retired) Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Alvarez has had many fights throughout his career. These are, without a doubt, the most important; those that marked a before and after at the level of him as a professional:

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Ryan Rhodes (2011): His first fight for a world title; where he came out the winner after beating Ryan Rhodes by technical knockout.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Flyod Myweather Jr. (2014): the only loss he suffered in his entire career; since for the young “Canelo” it was a very difficult challenge to overcome.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Miguel Angel Cotto (2015): a difficult dispute to overcome, but one that he was able to achieve; He obtained his world middleweight title with a unanimous decision of cards in favor of 118-110, 117-111 and 119-109.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Liam Smith (2016): Now his dispute was for another world title, that of super welterweight; where he was able to win it in round 9 by putting the Brit on the canvas and getting the victory. There is still no definite fight.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin (2017-2018): Another of the great walls that the young Mexican boxer faced. In the first fight he is tied by card decision, but it is not until the following year; where he wins by cards in his favor.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Sergey Kovalev (2019): The last title obtained, light heavyweight; by beating the Russian at the MGM Grand with a round 11 technical knockout.

News

Currently the fighter is waiting for his next fight, since due to the pandemic he has been delayed. He hopes to return to the canvas to defend his title against Anvni Yildirim on February 27, 2021.
