Cancer, No Longer a Taboo with Effective Colon Cancer Treatment

by Danis John Business Content Writer

A decade earlier, treatment of cancer was not quite possible. But with the invention of new medicines and technologies, this disease is no longer considered a taboo. Whether a person is suffering from colon cancer or lung cancer, there is a solution for everything. Colon is part of the digestive system. When malignant cells form in the tissues of the colon, it develops into cancer. Factors that affect the risk of developing colon cancer are age, health history and personal history of the patient. The patient experiences change in the bowel habit, blood in the stool, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, weight loss for no specific reason and feeling very tired.

The doctor first undergoes a physical exam, digital rectal exam and fecal occult blood test. colon cancer treatment depends on the stage of the disease, general health of the patient and whether cancer has recurred. There are different types of treatment available for patients suffering from this disease. Some of the treatments are standard while others are treated in clinical trials. Standard treatment is of four types- surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy. Surgery is the most common treatment that a doctor performs for all stage of colon cancer.

The doctor may remove the cancer using local excision, colostomy, resection, cryosurgery or radiofrequency. Drugs are used in chemotherapy to stop the growth of cancer cells. Cells are killed or stopped from dividing. High energy x-rays are used to kill cancer cells in radiation therapy. In targeted therapy, drugs or other substances are used to attack specific cancer cells. But they do not harm normal cells. There are also many treatments available for lung cancer. But they vary depending upon the type of disease and its stage.

This disease is curative if it is caught early. In case lung cancer is detected in the later stage, it is cured by palliative treatment. The doctor performs surgery when cure is considered possible. In other cases chemotherapy and radiation therapy is used in a cure. The three procedures that are performed to remove lung cancer are wedge resection, lobectomy and pneumonectomy. The most common side effects of surgery are infection, shortness of breath and bleeding. In radiation therapy, high energy x-rays are applied from outside the body in order to kill cancer cells. In chemotherapy, anti-cancer drugs are used to treat this disease. The side effect of this treatment is hair loss and stomach lining. Colon and lung cancer treatment is possible as it is a curable disease if caught at an early stage!
