Canadian Solar Inc. and Suzhou GCL Photovoltaic Technology Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd., have entered into a joint venture agreement to build a 600 MW capacity wafer plant in Suzhou, China, dedicated to Canadian Solar's requirements. The initial 600 MW capacity will be expandable to 1.2 GW, according to the companies. The total capital expenditure for the first phase of the project is approximately $77 million, which is expected to be financed 33.3% through the registered capital and 66.7% through debt. Under the terms of the agreement, GCL will contribute 90% of the registered equity, and Canadian Solar will contribute 10%.

Magnum Pv, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, has partnered with Schmid Technology Systems GmbH to establish a 72 MW solar PV panel manufacturing line in Ontario.Schmid Technology Systems developed the production line for Magnum Pv. At the heart of the system is a fully automated tabber stringer featuring high-precision contactless resistance soldering, which reduces long-term cell degradation due to thermal microfractures, the company says.Shipment of the modules, which are UL-certified, is expected to begin in October. Magnum Pv is currently securing orders in its initial production runs.

Natcore Technology Inc. has signed a joint development agreement with Eastman Kodak Co. that is designed to combine Natcore's unique combinations of materials and materials-processing technology, including its exclusive liquid phase deposition process, with Kodak's coating, formulation, drying and conveyance technologies. The scope of work will encompass development of all of Natcore's thin-film photovoltaic technology, along with Natcore's anti-reflection coating technology. The first stage will focus on bringing its nanostructured thin-film solar cell technology into commercial production, Natcore says.

The goal is to develop the roll-to-roll processing needed to make the flexible thin-film cell, verify it in Kodak's pilot line, design and build the commercial-scale deposition equipment for insertion into one of Kodak's underutilized film lines, and start commercial production. Natcore says it will initiate work on other projects as circumstances dictate. The work will be conducted at the Natcore Research and Development Center, located at Eastman Business Park in Rochester, N.Y. Last month, Natcore signed a lease for space at the business park.

US Equity Holdings and technology development company Nano Terra Inc. have announced the formation of Microline PV LLC, which will develop and commercialize solar photovoltaic technology.Developed by Nano Terra, Microline PV's metallization technology will bring significant performance improvements to crystalline silicon PV cells, according to the company. The technology can be used directly in equipment that is already deployed in many crystalline-silicon PV manufacturing facilities and is compatible with the most commonly used silver pastes, a key component in the fabrication of PV cells, Nano Terra adds.

AllEarth Renewables says it has commissioned the largest solar array in Vermont: a 2.2 MW system located in South Burlington.Pole-mounted AllSun Trackers use GPS and wireless technology to follow the sun throughout the day, producing more than 40% more energy than fixed solar arrays, the company says. The installation will sell an estimated 2.91 million kWh annually to Vermont’s Sustainably Priced Energy Development (SPEED) program.More than 75 local contractors, engineers, suppliers, developers, parts fabricators, manufacturers and other workers that had a direct hand in building the project attended the commissioning. Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, Lt. Gov. Phil Scott and Rep. Shap Smith also spoke at the event.
