Borrego Solar Systems Inc., a designer, installer and financier of grid-tied solar photovoltaic systems, says it has been awarded a contract by the General Services Administration (GSA).Through the contract, Borrego Solar is now certified to provide its solar installation services to federal agencies.The company says it expects increased interest from the federal and military sectors - particularly the Department of Defense, which is expected to continue to increase spending on renewable energy, reaching $10 billion annually by 2030, according to Pike Research.


Nanosolar Inc., a manufacturer of thin-film PV modules, has closed a $20 million funding round that is expected to fund continued expansion and newly committed projects.Current investors Mohr Davidow Ventures and OnPoint Technologies Inc. participated in the round, joined by new investor aeris CAPITAL, based in Switzerland."We believe solar printing is the future of low-cost harvesting of solar energy," says Erik Oldekop of aeris CAPITAL. "We are eager to be a part of Nanosolar's growth and validation."


Matinee Energy, a solar project developer and financier, has broken ground on the Matinee Energy Campus, a new 50-acre site in Benson, Ariz., that will house facilities for solar energy research, manufacturing and related job training.The campus will focus on engineering and manufacturing cost-cutting and enhancing the performance of solar mounting systems, Matinee Energy says. The company has partnered with consultancy firm GreenStone System Inc.


xWestinghouse Solar Inc., a designer and manufacturer of solar power systems, has signed a letter of intent to pursue a business combination with CBD Energy, a diversified renewable energy company based in Sydney, Australia.Key terms of the transaction have been approved by the boards of directors of both companies, subject to satisfactory completion of due diligence and definitive agreements. The companies are targeting execution of definitive documents in early March and a third-quarter closing date, subject to shareholder approvals and other customary closing conditions.Under the terms of the deal, Westinghouse Solar shareholders would receive shares of common stock in CBD Energy in exchange for their shares of Westinghouse Solar. CBD intends to apply for listing on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange prior to consummation of the transaction.


JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. has opened a new Australian subsidiary, JinkoSolar Australia Co. Ltd., based in Queensland, Australia.The newly opened office will serve as a sales and delivery hub and will house approximately 4 MW to 5 MW of modules for the region."The Australian market is highly oriented towards renewable energy, a trend which is reflected by the establishment of the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 Stationary Energy Plan," notes David Li, chairman of JinkoSolar.
