Canadian Registration Number

The Canadian Registration Number (CRN) is a number issued by each province or territory in Canada by an authorized safety authority for any boiler, pressure vessel or fitting that operates at a pressure greater than 15 psig (1 barg). If your pressure retaining product or system operates at a pressure greater than 15 psig you may require a Canadian Registration Number (CRN) to legally install and operate your product in Canada.

The CRN identifies that the design has been accepted and registered for use in that province or territory. The first registering province or territory is indicated by the first digit after the decimal. For example, a design registered first in Ontario and then in British Columbia might be issued the number 0H6245.51. If the letter C follows the designation of the province of first registration, it means the design is subsequently registered across Canada. For example: 0E3621.2C shows that the design was first registered in Alberta and then across Canada.

CRN, or Canadian Registration Number services are offered to manufacturers wishing to install and/or operate pressure boundary equipment in Canada. Technical services include calculations, analysis, and organization of inspection/testing. Consulting services for registration include documentation review, submission of application to regulatory authorities, or any subsequent interfacing that may be required to successfully complete the registration process.

Pressure retaining components must be registered in the province(s) of installation. Upon registration, a Canadian Registration Number (CRN) is issued. The registration is governed by Canadian Standards Association CSA B51 Standard, which provides guidelines for registration of various mechanical designs including but not limited to boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, steam traps, piping systems, and fittings. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) Code and various other design Codes (including MSS, API, ANSI, UL etc.) are referenced by this standard and outlines the rules for design.
