Can I take Ayurvedic medicines along with my regular allopathic medicines?

Health is not merely absence of disease but a state of physical, social, mental, spiritual and environmental well being. Western science, that is commonly known as allopathy, deals with the physical aspect of health. Ayurveda on the other hand cover all the aspects but unfortunately lacks the technological aspect and advancements particularly in the case of an emergency.

Advances in the western medicine have helped treat acute diseases but in cases of chronic diseases there have been setbacks. Allopathy is based on the concept of understanding of the mechanism of disease whereas Ayurveda is framed on the philosophy of understanding the origin of the disease.

Coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, paralysis, insomnia, etc. are all classified under lifestyle disorders. By combining allopathy and ayurveda, one can prevent the disease, control the ongoing biological process, reduce the damage done and prevent use of the medicines in future by improving the overall status. There is absolutely no harm in taking ayurveda treatments along with regular allopathic medicines (suggested for hypertension, neurological disorders, mental disorders, diabetes, heart diseases, arthritis, etc.) as long as one has informed the ayurveda practitioner/doctor. Though, it is very important to maintain a gap of at least an hour between both the medications.

Allopathy is the system of choice but once the acute symptoms disappear, people can switch over to Ayurvedic medicines. In other words, initial treatment of an illness could be from Allopathy and then the patients’ treatment could be continued according the Ayurvedic theory of Vat, Pit and Kaf for long lasting effect and eradication of cause.

Ayurvedic medicines are a combination of herbs and oils that cannot harm an individual in any manner. And the fear of chemical reaction between the components is taken care of, when an optimum gap is provided between the two doses.
