Can Asthma be treated with Ayurvedic Treatment?

Asthma is a respiratory problem which is characterized by narrowing of the airways. The disease can be seen in every age group even in the kids or aged people. This disease occurs when the body responses to a trigger such as frequent exposure to cold air, allergens in the air, emotional stress or heavy exercise.   • Indulgence in a Kapha and Vata vitiating diet and lifestyle 

  • Excessive intake of cold water, salt, yogurt or any cold ingredient 

  • Prolonged indigestion causing accumulation of metabolism waste in the body 

  • More often exposed to dust, smoke, and irritants

  • Staying in humid, cold, and damp areas. 

Vagbhata has also mentioned some other possible causes of asthma-like chronic diarrhea, excessive vomiting, anemia, fever, excessive exposure to smoke, strong wind, smoke, etc. 

Ayurvedic treatment for Asthma

  • Take black pepper with dry ginger powder, add 3-4 cloves and boil in water. When ¼ water is left, strain, and consume it warm.

  • Take 10 basil leaves and boil it with a pinch of turmeric, strain and drink 3-4 times a day. 

  • Make a paste of black resins, dates, long pepper, and licorice of 1tbsp and mix it well with honey.

  • Boil a cup of milk with a tbsp of turmeric and ¼th quarter of dried ginger powder at night. 

  • Boil licorice with dry ginger in a glass of water and wait till 1/4th quarter remains. Sip the water throughout the day. 

Suggested dietary changes for Managing Asthma – 

  • Avoid processed foods or rich in preservatives. 

  • Avoid sour food. 

  • Avoid heavy meals

  • Eat a light dinner

  • Avoid food kept in cooling in nature like rice, lentils, yogurt, buttermilk, bananas, or anything which  increases Kapha dosha
