Can Artificial Intelligence and Biometrics promise improved security?
To answer the question, we must first understand
the terms Access Control, Biometrics, and Artificial Intelligence.
Access Control is to let the access of the right
person to the right place of the facility.
The classical access control methods where
human-beings require had to depend on the following:
- Hand-held tokens such as ID card,
passport, etc. which can be stolen, faked, shared, or cloned (one person can be
registered with multiple identities)
- Knowledge-based tokens such as
password, PIN, etc. which is guessed or cracked, shared, or cloned.
Biometrics is broadly made by two terms ‘bio’ which
means physical and ‘metrics’ means measurement. Biometrics, in short, means
analysis of biological characteristics of people. It brings a breakthrough in
the access control that people need not carry their hand-held tokens or
remember their knowledge-based tokens. As their physical characteristics are
unique and cannot be stolen or replicated.
The two categories of biometric solutions are as
follows:
- Physical biometric solutions that
make use of unique characteristics of human being body parts that include
fingerprint, face, iris, vein, DNA, etc.,
- Behavioral biometric solutions
make use of human being’s behavioral characteristics such as voice, typing
speed, a unique way of holding & swiping the phone, heartbeat, hand
tremors, finger movements, navigation, etc.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a capability
possess by the intelligent machine to do the task that is otherwise associated
with intelligent human beings. In other words, it can also be defined as the
ability of an intelligent machine to replicate intelligent human behavior.
AI added another milestone in the access control.
It enables to store the biometric information into the database, analyze them
and then transform into machine understandable language to take the appropriate
action to grant or deny access to the person. For behavioral biometrics, AI
helps in selecting datasets of human behavior for analyzing them and then
raises an alarm on any deviation with the help of machine learning algorithms.
AI with biometric technology use in the corporate
world, government organizations, residential societies, banking industries
& so forth and raised the level of security. It is observed that the
combination generally uses for mass surveillance and remote authentication.
In the end, it can be concluded that the duo looks
promising to be deployed for improved security. It has escalated the arms race
between several high-profile tech companies, with some smaller firms getting in
on the action to deploy them.
Keeping on a par with the increasing popularity of
this developing technology, IDCUBE has started supporting AI & Biometrics
for Access control via its Access360 platform. IDCUBE is keen to further
improvise the technology in new areas by amalgamating the technology with
business logic.
