World has become a smaller place to live in. Thanks to the advancement of technology, you can stay in touch with your near and dear ones easily. You can reach out to people who stay far-off to your location by hopping onto a flight or boarding a train. An economical travel rate has made this possible for common people. But in this fast moving life, it is not always possible to pay a visit to your closed ones due to time constraints. But thanks to decreasing STD call rates, it is now easy to pick up your phone, dial the number and talk at length with people you care about, no matter the distance. Not only personal calls, but even business has benefitted a lot due to decreasing call rates.

This has been possible mainly due to advancement in technology for infrastructure needed to make outstation calls. Earlier, telecom companies had limited towers and stations which are used to make calls through online recharge phones. There were number of factors behind this. Primarily it needed large investment and technical know how to run them. Over the time, the hindrances were removed and STD calls became cheaper. Companies also implemented smart marketing strategies to sell STD plans. For example, many service providers started offering economical plans for people of Mumbai circle to make STD calls to Gujarat. As the number of people from Mumbai making calls to Gujarat was quite high, the product was an instant hit in the market. Similarly, calling rates to Delhi circle were reduced for people from surrounding regions like Uttar Pradesh.

Over the time, these call rates further got slashed. Call rates for not only surrounding regions, but all over the India became economical. An important reason for this can also be attributed to the stagnant opportunities of decreasing local call rates. They were as low as the companies could afford. Hence, they started exploring other avenues to attract customers and increasing their profits. Mobile internet and STD calls were the only option. Once the focus was shifted to outstation calls, network providers took proactive steps in decreasing tariff rates. Government policies also played its hand. Introduction of free incoming calls while roaming across India facilitated for a greater number of customers using their phones while outside their home circle. Once the groundwork was laid, network operators started providing free STD plans to their customers. You can make a certain amount of free STD calls by paying some amount upfront for a particular amount of time. It was easy for prepaid customers to avail such offers. They can activate them only when required and save on their outgoing STD calls.

Another important factor for introduction of free STD plans was rise in VoIP calls. These are the calls made using internet. Though not much, but the number of people using this facility in India is increasing. Using internet, on phone or for computer, you can make free calls to someone who is doing the same at the other end. Even in the early stages, telecoms sense that this is the way forward. And to counter the growing popularity, STD call rates are reducing with each passing day. The competition amongst network operators, too, has ultimately benefitted the end customers. The future certainly looks exciting in terms of long range communication.
