Are you planning a Cajun wedding? There are many great ways to incorporate Cajun traditions into your wedding, both traditional and modern. Cajun makes a great wedding them due to the combination of Southern and French influences. Warm Southern hospitality mixed with the French language of love can make for an amazing wedding ceremony.

Although traditionally held in a Church, Cajun tradition allowed for the act of jumping over a broom to be a sufficient ceremony for a wedding if a priest was unavailable, at least until a proper wedding could take place. Today’s weddings are a bit more elaborate though!

Older traditions include presenting a rose to the Virgin Mary and to the mothers of both the bride and groom. The lighting of a unity candle is also a part of the more modern tradition. Tasteful pranks and practical jokes are often part of Cajun tradition, including siblings dancing with a mop designed to look like or represent the bride or groom. Sometimes the newly married couple comes home from their honeymoon to find rice in their bed or their sheets shortened.

French music is a great way to tie in the Cajun theme to your wedding as well. Music and dancing are a large part of any Cajun wedding celebration. One of the wedding dance traditions includes pinning money to the bride’s vale for luck and good fortune.

It couldn't be a Cajun wedding without Cajun food! Get a great local caterer like New Orleans Cajun Grill to cater you wedding. Make sure to include the time honored traditional dish of spicy Gumbo over rice! To elevate the menu make sure to include fresh seafood selections as well. You can astound your guests with authentic Cajun cuisine that remind them of home, or  just make them wish they were back in the South!
