Breathe New Life into Your Dining Room - Without Completely Redecorating
by Robert F. Read My Articles, Learn More... If a complete overhaul of your dining room just isn’t in your budget, or you like many of your current dining room’s features, but still find yourself bored with it, why not consider getting a new dining table? Dining room tables dominate the dining room, and simply by updating your table and making a few other small changes, you may be surprised by how much you can accomplish as far as creating a new feel to your dining room.To Match or Not to Match
The first question you’ll have to answer when shopping for your new table is whether or not you’re going to purchase matching chairs. You have several options here. If it’s in your budget to get new chairs as well, you can do so. If that’s the case, you’ll have to choose between purchasing chairs designed to explicitly match the table, or choosing another set of chairs which complement it. If you’re not in the market for new chairs, that’s okay. Perfectly matched dining room sets aren’t a necessity. You can very likely find suitable matches without buying a set, or you can opt for a more dynamic dining room design by choosing a table which complements, but doesn’t precisely “match” your chairs.
What to Change
If it’s an update to your dining room style that you’re after, you won’t want a carbon copy of your current dining room table, of course. If you did, there’d be hardly any point to buying a new one—you can just have your old one restored. So consider how you’d like your new table to differ from your old one. Use the pieces you plan to keep in the dining room as a starting point. Think about their style, the materials, and the colors they represent. To complement them, you’ll want a dining room table that mimics at least one of these design elements in a way that pulls the room together. It need not emulate them in every way, however. Many modern decorators feel that a bit of divergence from perfectly matched furniture adds energy to a room. For example, you might choose a more modern table with a finish that’s similar to your antique hutch and chairs. The matching finish creates harmony, while the modern style jazzes up what might otherwise be a stuffy space. Or, you could opt for a table in a similar style, but with a different finish, and then choose a few other accents which complement the colors of old and new furniture alike.
Lifestyle
Of course, your dining table isn’t just for looking at—it’s for being used! For many families, that means more than just being a place to eat meals. The dining room might be where you gather for family meetings, where friends sit when they come over for a cup of coffee, and where your kids sit to color or do homework. Make sure the size and materials you choose for your dining room table suit your lifestyle.
